Help Identifying?

Also not sure about the wood used - the optimist in me wonders if it's Mahogany? It's very straight grained, totally different to the basswood used on my Jet King 1 guitar (which is similiar in style to this bass and the reason I bought this bass :D))

Hi All

I bought this bass a few weeks ago and im not really sure what it is, ive taken it all apart, everything off neck, pickguard, everything i cant find ANY model numbers whatsoever, from internet research ive been able to find that its a Teisco from somewhere in the years 62-65, i was hoping one of you might have seen it before?

Thanks!

I saw an Invalid Link Removed that appears to be the same as your's mralex (possibly slightly different tuners but black knobs and truss rod cover)?

Digging around some more I came across an aside article on drowninginguitars.com covering a whole range of weird and strange pickups - one of these is listed as from a Tulio EB-2 bass and is a match for the gold-foil slotted one used on these basses.

Also on this site is a photo (but alas no more information that I could see) of this EB-2 bass and many parts/designs are obviously shared with these "unknown" basses.

Some more searching and I came across a bass for sale on eBay (#181388883999) that's listed as a Tulio JB-1 Bass - and this has got to be a near perfect match for Nortega's and mine (with the white knobs/truss-rod cover). It has different elephant ear/bow-tie tuners though and a traditional bass bridge (a replacement like mine no doubt - and oddly angled...) but the "ashtray" bridge cover holes are still visible in the body. The Tulio headstock decal and JB-1 sticker don't look like they would have survived for long which would explain the lack of any markings on most of these basses. It's a pretty good lead and it leads - well, pretty much as to be expected - back to Teisco. From Wikipedia "Teisco guitars were also imported in the U.S. under several brand names including... Tulio"

Good research by quiet1; and yes, the bodies, if solid and not ply, most likely are mahogany. Unfortunately, so are the necks, and the trussrods are not particularly robust.

Yes as mine has lost a patch of finish from the back of the neck it appears to be mahogany too. I haven't dared touch my truss-rod, although it seems to have high neck relief it's possibly helping avoid fret buzz from a fretboard that appears to have de-laminated a bit. It plays OK as is so I'll let it be.

I picked up one of these a couple months ago and that was the general consensus as well. Tulio EB-2. The one I found was rough, fretboard was coming off, truss rod rusted and needed strings. Removed and reset the fret board, did some minor adjustments and now plays great. May require a new tone pot but not slowing me down any.
