since i've never played a spector, I don't know, but you might want to consider the esp ltd f-255... good price, good and a lot of sounds, and plays well...
oh yeah, and it looks so damn metal

Don't really know what basses go for down there, but I'll second the recommendation for the Spector Legend. Had a 4 for a little while (tuned drop B) and it sounded like your description.

Also, I know you tried the Cort A5, but try a B5 if you get a chance. The year I bought mine the neck was mostly Wenge with a pair of thin maple strips. Sounded better than the A4s that I tried (then again, I'm usually a bolt-on guy to begin with). Only drawback is that I can't seem to coax any boom on the bottom end, but in a fast metal situation, that's generally a good thing.

I've played on a spector and loved the neck.

I also like the tone of EMG pups more than Bart MK1's, they just sound like something is missing.

Well Alex Webster uses his Spector in the studio ,over his modulus I might add, so unless your band is more brutal than Cannibal Corpse I'd say your definitely in the clear.

I like the Ibanez SRX595 for what you described. It's agressive, can be very growly, and it's got a nice slim neck.

yesterday I went to a local store, and tryed a few basses. The Line 6 variax 5 string, some Yamaha. And an LTD JM 500, which has the best neck ive ever played on, it was also reduced from $2000 down to $1600. I couldnt say no. SO I put it on layby, cant wait till I pay it off!!
its got EMG HZ, B64(?) pre, mat black finish ash body, maple/ walnut neck, rosewood finger board, neck through. I fell in love instantly
