Hey TB’ers. I guess I’m kind of a “jazz bass” guy. All my Jags are Japanese. The few P basses that I have are filled with EMG. My j configs all have DiMarzio Model J pickups. Love them, so going with a Model P in the P hole. What would you throw into the double J hole? I’m not afraid to have extra routing done if you have a larger suggestion. Gonna go with an Aggie pre, but a pickup this size is out of my level of experience. Wouldn’t mind something like a MM.

TL;DR: If you were me, what pickup would you put in the bridge position? I’m leaning towards an Aggie pre, but feel free to lure me out of my comfort zone.

No. No I wouldn't. I mean.. look at all those switch ports... think of all the various things you could do with two Model J side-by-side humbuckers wired next to each other?

COuld you configure it so you could do them into a Precision style offset split? Two offset splits? Series and parallel and phase and muting individual pups and... stuff!

I bet there's a lot of different ways those six empty switch slots could be filled, and it would certainly be one-of-a-kind.

MM don't have the tabs in the right spot.
Fender Blacktop Precisions have pickups that would likely fit:

Good luck finding one of those pickups, however. It is one of Fender's best pickups, IME.
Make sure to get the ones with 8 poles pieces per slice. There are some later generation ones used in the Modern Player that only have 8 poles total per pickup.

I love Model J's so much that I might have to do this, but @gfen 's suggested switch system would probably give me nightmares...

MM wouldn't work even if I had the route widened? I figured it would take it out to the edge of the tabs? Like I said, my experience is with J and P only. It looks like the blacktops pickups are just double J's. I wonder how they'd sound with the pre...

That is a brilliant idea and I love it!
What I wonder though is if it would be better to get two different sounding jazz pickups so they don’t sound too much the same.

I was a'googling last night, there's a vendor with that in stock for $2. Although, i'd rather use a dremel to combine two cream Model Js. One, it'll look nicer with the body colour, two it'll be more obvious you've done something outlandish. Three, the DiMarzios are potted and I don't know how you seperate the cover from the guts and I'm not motivated to learn how. Four, I have a boner for my Dremel tool and stupidity. :)

I don't know how much I'd care to do most of that either, other than on/off for the individiual pickups so you could have just a P/J or the P/JJ.

I would think the big sell would be the JJ sound together, and not really worry about flipping between the two. Honestly, the only option of any of the switches I'd care about (contrary to the above) would to have a three way selector for JJ/JJ+P/P, but I know people 'round here love crazy options and he's certainly got plenty of options with six open switch ports.

Finally got it done. Used the guts from a Troy Sanders. The P is a Dimarzio Model P. The J is the noiseless with a stock CIJ Jag (sounds okay, but super quiet with the P). The neck is Warmoth and I'm happy with it, but quite a bit fatter than my other Jags, so it will probably go. Roasted maple is super nice though. Pickguard will be the first thing I replace. I hate pearloid and it doesn't line up in a couple places (truss adjustment and control plate). Gonna go with parchment and get rid of the control plate when it's cut.

Can the neck be shaved down? Looks fantastic. Calling all luthiers.
Too much risk in losing stability?

I’m not a big perloid fan but it does look great......
parchment will too though.

Nice bass!
