help me identify this old yamaha fiver

the slanted pickup

That angled aft pickup is a 'thing' with the Japanese, you see early Soundgears, Moons, and others with that configuration. This is also made in the Yamaha Taiwan facility, which since then has closed as they moved all non-Japanese production to China.

Nice enough basses, but they make me very sad, while embodying that Japanese mindset of relentlessly roiling their product ranges regardless of how the current or last year's models were selling: This RBX range of basses completely replaced the BB axes around the world, except for some Japanese-only BB models. Hard to fathom . . . .

For sale locally. Looked through hundreds of google images but couldn't find any 5 string Yamahas witih a slanted bridge pickup, so I'm thinking it's probably an older model. I checked it out and it seems ok - some buckle rash and fret wear. Couldn't locate a model or serial number. Looking for any thoughts or experience. Thanks! Peter.

not soundgear. it was the neck pickup that was angled.

most BB models moved to indonesia after taiwan ceased production.
