I think part of it is because their parents came of age in the 80s and that's the music they grew up listening to in the car when mom 'n dad shuffled them around

It's true, because that's what happened to me. It's why I love 70s stuff: yacht rock, Herbie Hancock, soul-jazz, etc. etc. I like modern stuff too, but there's usually a "tie" back to that decade's sound in some roundabout (pun intended) way.
