Which Velcro tape goes where?

  • You’re right: hard & scratchy hook tape goes on the board

  • He’s right: soft & fuzzy loop tape goes on the board

  • Only carrots on the board

No laws governing this... you can do it either way.

I have found that any used pedals I've bought had the the hard rough stuff on them.
Any prefab pedalboards I've seen come from the factory already set up with the fuzzy.

I started doing it this way just so I didn't have to change out velcro when I bought used ones already done.

Ah that’s a great idea!
Where did you get em?

Just google ‘em...they show up on the ‘bay, etc. Price has gone up as of late but I still find some competitive offerings on occasion. Used to get them free from the EZPass service center in Gloucester VA for my “fleet” of non-existent service vehicles but they finally caught-on to me. In the event of an IRS audit, I have like 8 neighborhood kids I can borrow.

Whether you believe it or not, there is a right way and wrong way to do things.

Loops on the board, hooks on the pedal.

Also, milk belongs on the top shelf of the refrigerator. If you store it somewhere else, you're doing it wrong.

:smug::bassist:
Huh? Milk belongs on the warmest shelf in the refrigerator (because physics) and the least accessible spot,, when most newer refrigerators have separate nicely accessible door pockets for milk cartons or gallons?

A dissenting vote here.

I think for me, it seems the fuzzy side wears out much more quickly than the scratchy side. If I have to replace the fuzz, I'd rather do it on one small pedal than an entire board. Also, I find the hook side easier to clean so the board looks neater to me. And finally, if I just take a couple of pedals with no board, all the places I play seem to have hard floors, so the pedals with fuzz feel a bit more secure than the hook side..

That being said, I'm clearly in the minority. So if you buy pedals from me, I'll be sure to remove the velcro first.
I'm with you on that one.
When I got my first board, it had a roll of hook and a roll of loop in the box. I figured that whenever not in use on the pedalboard, I prefer my pedals to have the loop side.
For me personally, the advantages of this outweigh the only disadvantage, which is that the board can collect more dirt when it has hooks exposed. Those filthy casuals that do not use every square centimeter of their board for pedals, but instead leave naked velcro exposed .... these people do not deserve any better than having their boards covered in dirt.

The only commercial board I ever bought where the velcro was pre attached was a t-rex tone trunk. It had the hook side on the board.

A friend of mine and I have an ongoing debate regarding Velcro tape on a pedalboard.

He sticks the soft, fuzzy Velcro (loop) to the pedalboard and the hard, scratchy Velcro (hook) on the back of the pedal. I put the hard, scratchy Velcro on the pedalboard and put the soft, fuzzy tape on the back of the pedal.

Who’s right?

(And because every thread is better with pictures, here’s the latest iteration of my bass pedalboard)

The pointy side catches more pubes and cat fur, so I put that on the bottom of the pedals.

He is correct and a lot of pedalboards have the fuzzy already on the board when you purchase it

I am personally shocked by how many people say the scratch side goes on the board. I always thought that is was standard to put the soft side on the board. Using long strips on the board and short strips on the pedals means the only velcro side that is exposed all the time is the stuff on the board. Why would you want that prickly.. and grabbing onto every piece of dust/lint that it comes in contact with?

Yep. In my experience hook-side velcro is vastly more common in used pedals than loop-side (fuzzy-side), so anyone who is going to be buying used pedals might as well go that way unless they have some really strong reason not to do so.
