I was experimenting with my rumble combo earlier today and I came across an unexpected situation. I was trying to bypass the preamp section of the amp by sending the signal from my MX5’s output through the effects return. My thought was to use the amp sim from the MX5 as the preamp along with effects, and disable the ir and use the rumble as my cab.
I had thought going into the effects return would put the signal from the MX5 into the power amp section, and that would be controlled by the master volume. While the signal did go through, turning the master up or down had no effect on the signal volume. As a matter of fact, as far as I could tell none of the controls on the amp did anything. I could only change the volume with the MX5’s controls.
Is there something strange going on here, or is this typical for combo amps? I always thought the gain and drive/level controls were in the preamp side and that the master knob controls the power amp side. Is that not the case? Does the effects return come in after the volume control? It seems odd to me that there isn’t a way to control the level of the effects loop on the amp itself. I don’t have any experience with other amp manufacturers so I’m not sure if this is a common situation or maybe just a rumble thing. Looking for advice on how to set up my amp to get the most versatility out of my modeler.
