That's my brothers name. Yes, James is a very common middle name, but Liam James really works. We pronounce Liam, lee-im. I can't see why someone would pronounce it "yum". I mean sure, that's the second half of William, but not really. Only very lazily. I say go with the first name of a grandparent. both my grandparents are called James, but one of them is called Bill (William, of course), cause when he was growing up in England it was more common to call someone by their middle name. So he's James William, and my brother is Liam James.
