Help! No Silk Flatwounds

I would think they chose the non double ball end headless design to be able to use any standard electric bass string.

Most standard roundwounds have the same roughly 3/4" uneven winding near the ball, so if I had to guess, they have at least 1" of distance between the ball and the nut.

I am wanting to definitely find out for sure for my own database of fitments, so hopefully someone with a Kramer Duke can let us know what kind of strings they are using, and if I have them, I can measure the exact distance of that winding, and we can put two and two together.

In photos I've see it does look like it has about an inch of space. I just asked the seller to measure it for me before he ships it out. I've looked through the forums here on TB and others and it seems that most Kramer Dukes have round wounds but mine is a fretless hence I would prefer the flat wounds. Trying to get a jump on getting some strings before the bass arrives but I may just need to wait to measure for myself. Hopefully A Duke owner will chime in.

my chromes have blue silk at both ends ... my Labella 760FL's just have silk at the tuner end ...

My Stingray tuners have super sharp edges that keep shredding the silk off my flatwounds. Anybody know of flatwounds that don't have the silk at the tuner end? Alternatively, is there a way to string through these sharp tuners without shredding/breaking the string? I fear that even the non-silks might split on these sharp edges.

Here is a good pic of the Rotosound medium scale strings. As you can see they are perfect. I think short scale strings may be too short and regular scale too long. You need to find the medium scale length strings.

labella hofner flats b/c feared the rotos have too much top end.

if these don't fit right i will update this. the duke is 31" according to my ruler so "short" scale strings should be cool.

I was worried that the short scale length would be too short and the silks would end up right in the bridge holes. Remember shorts are made for 30 inch or less length and the Duke/Aliens are 31 inch. That's why I went with the medium scale. Let us know how they fit when you get them.

As far as brightness is concerned I find the Rotosound Flats just right. They still have a nice presence without being zingy. If I need a warmer tone I just dial in the tone control to where I want it. I did replace my stock cap with a .1 cap. The higher value really helps to dial out more of the top end if you need to.

(Hofner Beatle Bass requires medium scale strings but it is a short scale instrument)

Hey Jason! I'm glad to see that raslroy got the strings from you. If you remember we had probably the same discussion a few months ago regarding "Strings for the Duke" and with your help I ended up getting the Rotosounds. I remember you suggesting the Labella Hofner flat wounds to me also. I'll be curious to hear from raslroy how the Labella's work out.

Yes I just did not recall the measurements on the Duke when I was talking with Raslroy. But once I saw your picture I was sure the La Bella's would work.

One thing I think the La Bella's Beatle Bass strings specifically is since they have small diameter tuner winding sections. They are as thin as the core and wrapped in silk.

So lets see how they work out!

Nice 1 Jason! I highly recommend the la bella beatle bass strings for the duke. Was even able to install the strings like a regular 6 string guitar.

Sad thing is right after i pick it up to play it i dropped my duke and it falls on a another kramer aluminum dmz chipping the back of the duke neck. So my new bass day is a mixed bag of joy and anger.

back to the strings- they sound great on duke almost sounding like a stingray with flats.
plus its black silk on the black body= awesome.
