Help Out A Beginner

Another guy has offered to sell me his crate bt 50 bass amp for $200. Would that be a good buy?

It would be a great buy if he gave you $200 to take it off his hands...

I'd pretty much avoid Crate unless you got it as a gift, and even then - you might wonder why the gift giver doesn't like you enough to give you a decent amp.

Oh, and for all of you Crate aficionados...that's just my opinion.

Ok thanks for that, I guess I'll stick to ones made by better companies then.

I can't endorse the Fender B-DEC 30 enough. I'd consider myself a "learning advanced intermediate" bassist, and the B-DEC has enough flexibility and built-in lessons, that it will improve about any player. It can also be used as a regular practice amp if you don't want to use all the features.

I know you don't live in SoCal, but there's a guy selling one in SanDiego asking $270 ([Invalid or Expired Link Removed]). That means you can get it for something less than that. Keep your eyes out on the local Craigslist and eBay and you'll find one before long for under your $300 price point.

Trust me, you'll be happy with it!

I'm going to look into that. I have a Fender P Bass and love it, and I know Fender is a great brand too. Thanks for your help, really appreciate it :D

The latest version of that Crate sounds actually very decent. But, I bought the BT-220 (220 watts instead of 50) for $200 when they were on clearance at GC. The BT-50 sounded much better than the Fender Rumble 100, and it sounded louder as well.
So, it's a decent amp, but for that money, the Ampeg would be better - and you can find one used. I also stand by my recommendation of a used Behringer head and cab. At least that head. Hard to beat. Anyhow, good luck!

I have a Fender rumble I spent about $300 on.....great sound and quality for a budget bass amp. It is availabe as a 15 watt 1x8, a 25 watt 1x10, a 60 watt 1x12, and 100 watt as either a 2x10 or 1x15. I have the 100 watt 1x15, and it was definetly worth what I spent on it.

That's good to hear, I guess I'll leave the Crate as an option then. And I still haven't been able to find a Behringer setup like the one you mentioned :(

I'm looking to get an amp of at least 50 Watts, preferably louder so that I can be heard easily when I play with a drummer. The guy who had the Fender sold it, and I'm having trouble finding a good head cabinet combo. This is proving to be more difficult than I had anticipated :(

Does anyone know anything about this Fender? The plate on the back of the cab reads:

Speaker Enclosure
Model: V.T. Bassman 15
Serial Number: (can't read it, the pic is too blurry)
Speaker Impedance: 8 OHMS
Total Impedance: 4 OHMS

Then is says Fender Musical Instruments. Finally, it lists a place in California as it's place of origin. The text is blurry in the pic, it looks to say something like Fullerton, California - U.S.A , but I am unsure of the exact text due to the picture quality.

All Fender amps and instruments were made in Fullerton, CA in Fender's early days. If this was made in the early 70's, CBS Corp. owned Fender during this time and the amp will say something about "a subsidiary of CBS..." Anyway, I own a 1970 bassman combo tube amp with one 12" speaker. It sounds great (as any tube amp should). But if you want to play against a drummer, it may not be powerful enough. It all depends on how loudly, or softly, the drummer plays. But it's been my experience that drummers don't play softly.

Bassguitarbubba: It's a 2 x 15" one, not sure if that would be loud enough.

I've decided to sell my small practice amp for my guitar, to bring in some extra cash towards buying a new amp. A guy is willing to sell me his this:

"Hartke Bass Rig - Power Amp & Double Stack Spkr Cab Model 1400.

140 watts, 2x8 + 15 bass cab"

for $350. Seems like a pretty good deal to me. Anyone have some input for me?

While i can't comment on the hartke from personal experience, the people i've jammed with when i played guitar and they had hartke systems that sounded really good, especially considering the price. I've owned a similar ampeg (ba210sp) and the peavey tnt 115. Both were great amps, and the peavey was all but bulletproof. I'd probably go for the ampeg personally, LOTS of tone options that are really usable and easier to carry than either the hartke or peavey systems. The peavey i had took up my whole trunk, and i don't have that small of a trunk, and from the looks the hartke is even larger. Just my two cents.

Well, I'm very new to bass guitar, I've played electric guitar for a bit but decided to give bass a try. Unfortunately I only have a small, 15W practice amp for my electric guitar. I am looking to get an amp that I can use with my bass, or preferably with both. I have seen a fair number of Peavey amps for sale in my area, and am wondering if they would work with both my electric and bass guitars. I have looked at a Peavey Classic Chorus 130, but am not sure if that would work. If anyone can help me out, it would be very much appreciated. I just want an amp that can do my bass (and hopefully guitar too) justice. I've got around $300 to spend, and am mostly looking at used ones. However, if anyone knows of a good amp I could get new for that price that would be great. Thanks everyone :)

For probably less than $200.00 you can get a 80W to 120W Crate. This is not a bouteque amp, and not th ebe all, but they are real decent for the price and are decent power for practice and for small simple gigs. I've Gigged my BX100, and I have an Ampeg SVT-CL. it sounded good with maybe 200 people in the room....course it was a grand opening for a BBQ joint, and the beer was flowing.....seriously, Crate will do. Its simple, not a lot of options as far as tweaks, but even if it breaks they are cheap to fix and the ousnd is okay for a practise amp you can gig in a small way.
