Help picking next bass?

I'm a guitar convert, and have been playing for about two years. I picked up a MIM Fender P Bass on a whim and really liked it. I've been looking to expand my quiver, and today I went to GC to play around.

Here's my observations:
-When I play by P Bass at home, it feels great. I like it, it rocks, it sounds good when I jam with friends.
-After playing a J and J-type non-fender necks, the American P in the store felt huge and chunky...but by the time I get home, my P feels normal again.
-I played a Schecter Damien, and to my surprise it felt the best out of them all. I liked the fretboard...the frets just felt -good- and the finish was very nice and smooth. The body felt nice, very very sturdy feeling.
-I am intimidated by J bass / mutli pickup guitars! I can't ever seem to get what I want out of them and end up fiddling forever. I'm definitely a candidate for a two knob setup - VOL and TONE!

So...how do I find a bass that has the "feel" of that Damien (without the terrible bat inlays on the fretboard) with passive P-style pickups, J neck, and classic styling?

For me a P body (especially the 54 style, or something like a Model T) just looks amazing, and I can't seem to get "into" other looks as much.

Multi pickup basses usually have 3 good settings; neck, bridge and both. Plus if you're anything like me, no amount of fiddling will get a Jazz bass to sound the way you want.
I think that's probably where I'm at. So I need to find a PJ combo or a straight up P with a J neck, I think. The Model T looks pretty close to that, from what I can tell, but I can't find one to actually play.
