Well the new finish looks a little cheesy, but I could deal with it as long as it's not sticky. Looks like the pickup might be original. Feeling the vibe on this one from the pics...I'll give you $400 for it, and pay actual shipping ;) But seriously, have fun with it.

Its 100% legit.

Look at the bridge position. Around that time they incorrectly fitted the bridges too far towards the back edge of the body which meant the fitment of a longer G string intonation screw.

I know this cause I've got a dead stock 71 with the bridge in the wrong place with the long screw.

Looks like you got yourself probably the best deal that has ever happened, anywhere!

Hecks alive. Just checked out ur flickr pics....you are one hell of a lucky dude, jeeeeeez... that is the deal of the century.

Ha.. its still got the extra long G screw....think I need to sit down!

More pics just went to Flickr. Some shots of the great neck, and the lighting shows what I meant by the finish "texture."

As I continue to educate myself, I have found that the neck stamp date refers to the date the neck was made (Dec71). The body from '72 was later mated to this neck, making the bass a '72... and the complete original instrument. I'll be sending a message to fender later today to see what more they can tell me.

No guard in stock, ordering one tonight. For all those interested, I'll keep this thread updated in the coming days/weeks as I continue to learn more about this instrument. Hopefully I'll have a pickguard sometime next week (and a more modern hardshell, Mr. Aaron was right), then its off to the shop for a fret dress and setup.

Joe, seems to me you got a real steal there. If the truss rod is OK yer in business. Looking at the pic of the butt end of the neck obviously confirms it's a '71 bass but you have an "A" neck there and in a lot of circles, that's the neck to have... That denotes an 1 1/2 inch nut width. Here's a blurb from a Fender Tech Talk page..."There is occasional confusion about C, U and V neck profile designations and A, B, C and D neck width designations. From the early '60s to the early '70s, Fender referred specifically to the nut width of its instrument necks using the letters A (1 ½"), B (1 5/8"), C (1 ¾") and D (1 7/8"). These letters were stamped on the butt-end of the necks and had nothing to do with neck profile." You done real good with this bass....congrats. :D
