Help! Searching for the perfect short scale bass.

If your on the lower end of the Budget scale, Id check out the Gretsch 2220.I bought mine used off a gentleman on here. The neck feels great, The pick ups sound great, Switching and pots worked well. My only semi complaint is the tuners done feel the greatest, But they seem to hold tune decently, just not the smoothest. I may replace them. But thats it, otherwise a great Shorty

I have had that Gretsch on my GAS list for a while now...but nobody has any in stock to try .....how did you get yours, from L&McQ?.... not sure if I want to order one without at least trying it

what colour is yours?...I asked the question back then because it appears to be 2 different finishes,others disagreed , but I didn't feel like arguing...

I would write to Sire and tell them if they make a short scale V7 Vintage, you would buy one.
At least you'll know that you've done what's possible to try to get what you want.
I already wrote to them about SS basses.

What do you find 'not perfect' about your MIJ? If you want a larger variety of sounds,
I'd suggest a Mustang P/J.

I love my Squier Jags for short-scale work, enough so that I have two: one with rounds and one with flats. The round wound guy will get a pickup upgrade at some point but I'm not unhappy with it stock. I'd suggest playing one in person if you can because the weight can vary a lot, at least it did with mine. I also had a short-scale Gibson SG. Well made, but god, I just detested its sound. Lo-fi and hollow. At least I was able to flip it for what I paid for it.

i bought mine out of the classifieds on here. Back when i lived in thunder Bay and our dollar was at par. It was a great surprise.
Im not sure what L&Ms policy is on returns but id ask, its definitely a bass worth checking out

Another option is to do a Warmoth parts build. You might be able to squeeze everything in at the top end of your budget, if you don't get carried away with options. The big thing is you can get what you want in a Fenderish package. The quality is excellent by most reports.

I love my MIJ Fender. It's just that it's equipped with flats with and i use it for old school stuff, as it was equipped originally. I want something a little more modern. I feel the Birdsong is a too expensive for me and I feel the Kala is more of a novelty instrument for travelling (I'm probably wrong! Sorry if I offended anyone who plays a U Bass!). I've been looking at the SS Jaguar Bass, but that would require a pickup upgrade and people say wood contributes to the sound of a bass, so it'd be a bit weird having £200 pickups in there with wood that's a bit of a let down. I've been looking at the Maruszcyzk instruments and they look cool. The Elwood 4b basses are great. Am I under the wrong impression you choose from a selection or can you have a custom built bass from them? Many thanks for the suggestions.

The Gretsch is interesting but some reviews have been debatable as I've saw and it's quite a cheap instrument. Warmoth was also an idea, but I'm quite the 'add all the frills' kinda person, so it'd end up well over £1K and it'd be a nightmare if I damaged any pieces in assembly XD

You can either choose from a selection or have a custom one built to your spec.....
