Help with a bassist

Hey guys, so I've got a bit of a problem that i think you bassists can help me out with. I'm the guitarist in my band of four people. we have me, a bassist, a drummer, and a keytarist. We've been practicing and quite frankly working fairly well together for the past 6 months, gradually building up our sound as sort of a metalcore/jazzy fusion mix. However, last month our bassist began to change his style.

Normally I'd be fine with this but what really irked me was how he changed it. I'm a strong believer that bassists should primarily play a rhythmic part in the mix of the band, so naturally I was very annoyed when he began to play like a lead instrument. Honestly this is absolutely ridiculous and I have no idea what got into him. There are times when I can even hear the bass over myself. He even switched his tone to a higher one so that it'd be more audible.

So I guess my question is: What's the quickest, easiest way to get rid of him? And how can I make it look like an accident?

If you know how to run the band so well, why don't you switch to bass and have him play guitar? A bass can easily be used as a "lead instrument", look at Geddy, Les Claypool, Flea, John Paul Jones, Steve Harris, Chris Squire, ect. If you are really so "AWESOME" that you don't need a bassist you could always go solo with the keytarist and give the bassist the drummer as compensation.

Well since he seems to be fulfilling the role of lead instrument I think it's time you got a bass and started to back him up a bit so that the overall sound and music is more balanced and interesting.

Well in all technicality the E string would work better but make sure you use a guitar string to make you more METAL. A better way to do it would be asking him to hit you over the head with a banjo or even an acoustic guitar. The shrapnel from it will likely kill him and you AWESOMENESS will leave you unharmed.

Try some Nitro, or maybe some C4. Just watch out proceeding too quickly, because "Speed Kills".

Well you're not gonna be able to change how he wants to express himself on his instrument. If you're the bandleader then you can tell him that you're looking for a specific kind of bass role and he needs to fulfill it or find a new group to work with. Otherwise your options are mutiny or learn to share another chunk of the spotlight.

That's a pretty rad idea. I'd have the extreme advantage though, and if there's one thing I hate, it's unfair advantages. I like being the bigger man, ya know?
