I recently had to scale down my amp setup from an old acoustic 220 (which I loved) to a trace elliot ELF combo. This was all due to some medical issues that popped up which limit the amount of weight I can safely carry. So far I’ve been happy with the Trace Elliot as it’s size and have allowed me to comfortably carry it while the volume has been good enough for the gigging and touring I’ve done since I purchased it. Tiny amps are the best!
Despite all this, I’m sorta left wanting more tonality out of the ELF. My acoustic 220 had this warmth and slight grit that I really enjoyed and I definitely miss it. The elf is good, but it just sounds very “modern”. I was thinking of maybe putting some sort of DI box/preamp at the end of my effects chain could help solve this problem and “color” my sound a bit more.
I’ve heard the Noble bass DI might do something like this, but I just don’t have $1k+ to shell out for something like that right now. The Mesa boogie subway preamp and the Darkglass Microtubes both look pretty cool, but then again I’m afraid they won’t achieve what I’m looking for tonally. Maybe a Preamp/DI like that isn’t what I need and instead I could use something like the Motown DI box that would color my sound.
I don’t really know where to start and would hate to shell out a few hundred dollars towards something that I’d ultimately be unhappy with.
