Help with adjusting Truss rod!

I have a late 80's Aria Pro II XRB series bass and I need help with adjusting the truss rod.

My strings are way too high and when I lower them by the bridge I get an insane amount of fret buzz.

So I am decided that the truss rod needed adjusting.

When I took off the neck to adjust the rod it would not tighten at all but it would however loosen.

Can I use a type of lubricant like WD-40?

I need help! My fingers are really sore lol!

Thanks!

Put the neck back on, tune it up, and then check your relief. Do this by fretting your lowest string at the 1st fret and the 17th, then checking the space between the frets in the middle and the string. You should have a bit of space between them, but not much (people's preference varies, but I like mine to be about 1/32" to 2/32" relief).

If it absolutely won't tighten, your truss rod may be maxed out. This can be fixed, but it won't be easy nor cheap.
