Help with EV RE20 that rattles

Hello TBers,

I bought an EV RE20 on Craigslist yesterday. When I tried sticking it in front of my bass cab, there was a huge fuzz in the signal. I then took the top off the mic and found there was a loose black disk looking thing right under the diaphragm that was moving. I took it to my mic/amp guy and he said he was scared to do anything with it.

Have any of you been able to fix this or know of a way I can? The alternative is sending it to EV which will cost $200 to repair. Since I was lied to and paid for a working mic, the $200 in addition to what I paid, will exceed the price of a new one. The person who sold it to me has not returned any emails/texts/calls. So I want to try and fix it besides sending it back to EV for $200.

Thanks guys!

Any advice is welcome!

A few options/suggestions:

  1. check out Link Removed as they do RE-20 repairs starting at $109
  2. See if this diagram helps you identify the specific part that's rattling: Link Removed
  3. It's possible that the internal filter and foam have deteriorated, allowing other parts to rattle
