Help with Fender Custom Shop...

It would be a lot more cost effective to just buy the bass and have someone refinish it.

As a rough guess, and depending what the dealer's cut is, I would think it would be right around $3000. I think the custom shop would be using their own materials (quartersawn neck, etc.) rather than just painting an AmStd. So my guess is based on the price of an NOS Time Machine with about another $500 or $600 for the custom paint.

So I went and looked who SIMS was, because I've never heard of them. Looks like they do good work, but are these inlays what I think they are?

I just got a reply from SIMS and they said they would paint it for £235, a MIM Jazz would cost me around £470 so altogether I would be paying, £705. I was going to put some Quarter Pounders in it too.

I don't know what to do now!
I doubt you would be able to get a custom jazz bass in all yellow for less than that amount. Its not a bad option if that's what you have you heart set on. I would try and pick up a used MIM jazz in the UK (try basschat.co.uk) as it may save you some money.

I guess, I could get a Squier Jazz Bass, but than the quality of a Squier compared to a MIM Jazz Bass is a fairly big difference isn't it?

I want the bass to be good quality so I can gig it along side my American Standard Jazz Bass.
I would look for a used MIJ or MIA bass if quality is an issue. THey have the best quality and you may be able to find a beaten up one used (not a big deal if you are going to refinish it anyway).

Yeah that's true, if I got a MIA I know I wouldn't need to replace the pick ups or bridge because I love mine already.

I wont get the money for this refinishing and painting till June, so I have 4 months to look at different Jazz Basses and that.
