Help with first decent bass amp

+1 for Carvin. I got two BRX 4.10 cabs both used altogether was 600 bucks. Find a used Carvin B1500 or B1000 head for 3-400 bucks and you got yourself one hell of a bass rig.

That's a great deal for those cabs. Buy a NEW BX1500 for 499.00 delivered, with warrantly, and you are pumping 450watts into each of those cabs (each with it's own volume knob).

I have decided that i'm going to buy a used 410 cab, but I have no idea at all for what kind of head I want/need. I am looking at everyones replies but I'm reading all kinds of different things, is there a head you can recommend thats good for the music I play (hardcore with lots of trash/death metal influences) I am also not a big fan of lots of knobs on my head so I want something simple. Thanks!

If you want the 'classic' metal bass tone, I would recommend an Ampeg SVT 3 pro or 7 pro. If you've got the extra cash, get yourself a Tech 21 BDDI or VT bass. I love my 3 pro/VT combo and always get compliments on my tone at gigs. I've also heard very good things about the 7 pro, which might work better for you.
Swing me a pm if you like, and I'll send you a couple of recordings I've done with the 3pro/vt and 3pro/BDDI so you can get an idea of how they sound.

Advise: don't cheap out on the cab. That is the most important component of your amp. Also, don't buy into the "you gotta have a 4x10" crap. That is yesterday's news. Try a bunch of different cabs. Speaker size and number do _NOT_ indicate the performance or sound quality of the cab. Keep an open mind. Buy with your ears, not your eyes.

I agree with this, somewhat. A 410, 212 or a good 115 would all work fine. But I wouldn't recommend having less than that, because when it comes down to it, you need to be able to move air. Especially considering the genre the OP is going to be playing.

You can buy a new Genz Benz combo on Ebay for half that. Or less.

This is a real bargain. I've also seen their Shuttle 6.2 for 4 beans new. Used Eden 410 or something similar are all over craigs.

Used Eden Metros and SWR Red Heads are great amps and they are all over for half that money.

The new Genz Benz, with a bit of luck, will last for decades.

The 6.2 has gotten great write ups. And will power your sound to levels you never dreamed possible while playing the Fender.

You can be a Rock God!
