Help with IC chip

Not sure if this is the right place to post this. I'm thinking of building a orange squeeze compression box but can't find one of the components (I live in the uk). It's a IC-1 4558. This will be my first project but I cannot find this chip anywhere!

Does anyone know what I could substitute for this? Preferably something easier to source!

Without the full part number or schematic it's hard to tell exactly which part you need but I would guess either this: Invalid Link Removed (opamp)

Or this: Invalid Link Removed

Or it could be a cmos multiplexer, but that sounds like an odd part to use in a compressor.

The Texas Instruments RC4558P is probably the easiest to find 4558 chip. The JRC4558D is what was used in Tube Screamers, but I don't know if they're still in production. It's a standard op-amp pinout, so I'd imagine you can probably use something common like the TL062 or TL072.

EDIT: After some quick research, it looks like the JRC4558D is what was used in the original Orange Squeezer.

If it were me, I'd solder in a socket and try a few different chips. Since it's a compressor, not a distortion pedal, you may get better results with a higher quality, lower noise chip. I'd try a Burr-Brown chip, like the OPA2134 or OPA2132.

The 4558 is a VERY common dual op-amp chip. You do not have to use the same brand of chip, any 4558 op-amp will work.

I'm sure Invalid Link Removed used to have them (I'm sure it was bits box that I got a small stack from a year or two back), they don't have them listed individually at the moment, but you could email and ask (great website for when you want lower quantities of electrical bits).

I'd agree with sticking a socket in there instead of hard soldering the IC and trying a few different chips (may also be worth while throwing in some variable resistors to control the in circuit voltages, depending on what you want to try).

RS is good, though they sometimes add a fair whack of postage onto the order.
