It appears that what looks like tape in main picture is actually a Yamaha plate, which we know doesn't belong. I had to get a different picture to verify. Anybody have any ideas as to what the fret markers might be made out of to age like that or are they just that dirty?

The plot thickens. Received a close up pic of the neck plate. Says Made in the USA and Patented. More confused now than I was orginally. Also of note the stripe down the center of the body appears to be a metal strip and not wood. In response to my previous question about the fret markers is that they don't appear to have been white. They are more of a reddish brown and are uniform in color with each other. The lighting and picture quality have not been very helpful.
Looks like this is about to be a NBD. Made an agreement to purchase this bass. Still lots of questions but maybe I can get some more help in the NBD thread.
