Help with P bass Deluxe

Alright everyone, thanks for checking this out.

So I have been thinking about a p bass special lately as I need to bring out the top midrange a bit to get that P bass tone (which I love very much) to cut through/sit where I want it in the mix. I have used a P in the past with this project, and don't really want to switch the tone as much as I want to be able to dial in a bit more high-mids to cut through the mix. I figure that a p bass deluxe/special would be most practical to get where I want to go, but I am not an active eq kinda guy. I thoroughly enjoy my passive p tone, and want to find out if I can just grab a MIM and rip out those active electronics and possibly throw a toggle switch in there (to keep that classic P sound on the tracks where I desire that low end "thump").

Is this possible? I want to avoid having to pay $1,500.00-$2,000.00 for an american deluxe p bass (which has a passive/active toggle) because I want it to be practical in all aspects of its purchase/use. I dont need the active electronics at all, and above all, I dont want an MIA because I dont know if this guitar will fit my needs (as described above)... plus I am not gonna want to throw my brand new $2000 MIA in a van and take it all over the place.

If I get a MIM deluxe and take out the active electronics, will it be well suited for the needs I describe above??? Will it sound good as a passive bass and will I be able to dial in more upper mids into my classic passive P bass tone??? Ultimately I need my tone to cut through the mix more- is this possible or am I out of my element... let me know

I own a MIM P-Bass Special. Bought it new in '04. It is the passive model. It does all that you described as far as tonal varieties that you're looking for. Its got the classic P- bass tone with the added benefit of the J p'up at the bridge. Dial in or out as much of the J as you need. I love mine. I'm not sure if Fender offers the passive model still. If you get the active, I'm sure you can "passive-fy" it, and get the tone you want. Try ebay to see if any passives are listed.
