Help with passive sub

I was just given a passive sub with built-in crossover (8 ohm). I have a Yamaha Powered Box Mixer mixer Invalid Link Removed I know that it is best to use the main out and use a seperate amp for the sub, but will this work?

Simple question (I think). Can I run my mixer/amp in stereo (Main A = Speaker/ Main B = Speaker chained to sub)? Will that give an 8 ohm load to one side and a 16 ohm to the other? Is tha ok?

Or, is it better to run in mono with Main A = Speaker chained to Speaker and Main B = Sub. I think that still gives different loads to each side. I hope this makes sense.....

You still have sub frequency range going to your main speakers. You can poorman's crossover if you EQ them separately. Should be possible since it mentions using one channel on monitors. Cut everything off below 100hz and boost everything above a little. The ''optimise for monitor'' option may do that even better.
Your main speakers are 8ohm right? The amp/mixer will run down to 4 ohm according to spec, so run the mains on one channel in parallel (4ohm) and the sub on other channel (8ohm).
 
If you have both mains on one side and the sub on the other, PAN bass heavy material (bass, kick) to the sub and higher stuff (guitars, vox) to the mains. I'd put keys in the middle. Also, some judicious EQ may help as well (ex: cut lows on guitar/vox on the mains side, cut highs and mids on the sub side). That way, the passive crossovers in the speakers may not eat up much wattage. Experiment a bit to see what sounds best.

Better yet, flick the main/monitor switch to MAIN (L-R) / MON, connect the SUB to MONITOR OUT, and then use the MONITOR dial in each channel strip to turn up or turn down the channel in the sub. This is known as AUX FED SUBS. This is assuming you don't need monitors.

Read the specsheet. I only read the blurb. There is a monitor tuning setting which probably includes a big old HPF. I don't know if the monitor setting is automatic but if it is the monitor sub plan is no good. Other way around would work.

Went through the manual and couldn't find anything on a monitor tuning setting, so I'll have to take your word for it. An HPF would definitely nix the aux fed sub thing.
