Help with Purchasing a Cowboy Hat

If you don't want to spend much, hit up the local theater costume shop. They will have tons of stuff - of dubious style and quality - but they will have it.
I have boots and hats and would recommend trying out many different styles. Hit up the local farm supply place and check out their wares. You might find what you need on the cheap, but odds are against it. Good boots cost $$$, but they will last as long as you want them to.
Not all boots fit all feet. Hat wise, I can't do straw, just doesn't feel right to me. Spend the time checking out everything you can find. IMHO,YMMV, SSMHODS,OIMACTTA...

A few weeks ago I found a place south of Atlanta that had a great boot selection, and I picked up some decent Tony Lama's marked way down. GF wanted me to have a pair. If your GF likes cowboy boots like my GF does, it will be worth the money on the first night!
I've got a Scala 4 seasons felt cowboy hat. I look kinda ridiculous but it keeps me dry in the rain and warm in the cold.

Wool hats are cheap and a waste of money.
Felt is the only way to go...and with a felt hat, you can keep it for life.

Then for a good buy, hit Ebay and find one in your size that you like the look of. If you want to customize it, just put the teakettle on, use steam and work on it patiently.

I'd say that's pretty much perfect. And they really do look better when they're beat up.

Felt is way hot under stage lights. I wore my black straw and its cooler and lighter for sure.
Some advise from South Texas, I'd hold off on the bolo tie unless you're over 70 and own a ranch. And if you're wearing a hat, the boots are mandatory. Nothing says "wannabe" like a cowboy hat at reboks or loafers. Remember The Alamo!
+1 from New Mexico. You have to have boots to go with your hat. Save some money on the buckle as well unless you're going for the shirt tucked in George Strait look. Is this a straight up Country gig or is it Alt-country, Americana?
Also, find a local store so you can try on the hats, they are not sized like a baseball cap. Western stores always have nice folks that will be more than happy to help you make sure your boots and hat fit properly.
