Thanks for all the help - after really figuring out the sound I wanted, I discussed pickups with the builder and have placed my order (with Delano JC 5 HE/M2). TalkBass is awesome.

Help with selecting pickups for dream bass

I think most pickups will get you there but you'll need strong techique to get the rear to work.
I'd say Delano's or Aguilar, even though I think Nordstrand make some of the best out there..from what I've tried, but they will highlight or expose your technique..depends which side you sit on.
If running passive, you are going to need to set up your amp well and also beware that you dont colour the pickup too much.
If you dont have much knowledge of different pickups, just buy a decent brand with strong resale.
That means Aguilar from that list, imv and try them.
Update: Delano's are strong pickups so it would be interesting to get a user update.

I never really connected with the clean sound of the Delanos - for my style I think I would have been happier with single coils or a bridge humbucker combo. It is up for sale: For Sale - Maruszczyk Cazpar 5-String Short Scale . It is a super nice bass but I realized that the ergonomics of headless basses fit my body better. I'm sure if I would have ordered it headless with single coils I'd love it - the quality is great and the black and gold look awesome.
I'm heading out right now to pick up my Ibanez EHB1005SMS that I had Aguilars put in. Based on videos (thank you @LowEndLobster ) I'm pretty sure I will be happy.
