I just finished writing a review of the Hen-Bev bass for Guitar World. I know nobody here READS that magazine.... my dirty little secret is I've been writing bass reviews for them for 7 months or so...

Anyway, I spent a lot of time with one, and did a video demo of it (which will be posted on YT when it comes out in print).

I felt it was too expensive, but... it was a cool bass. The tension-free neck and the through-body individual bridge give it a very clear tone. The sustain and note purity are exceptional. Now, is it for me? No. I'm not a big sustain nut. Half the time I'm either palm muting or stuffing foam under the strings, so... not my taste. However, if you like a ringing, sustained tone with lots of individual note clarity... this bass does that really well.

The EMG Hz pickups are getting a bad rap I think, maybe because people are confusing them with the cheapo EMG Selects. HZs are EMG's passive pickups, they sell for around $200 a piece, they ain't cheapos. I thought they sounded good in that bass, they have a certain pristine quality that matches up with the intention of the builder.

Again, is it for me? Nah. I've been moving further and further away from a bright tone. Flatwounds, foam, and really old dead roundwounds are what I like these days. To each his own.

EDIT: Under their FAQ it says that you can supply your own pickups with the same dimensions and they will send it to you with those instead.

Still might cost the same though.

Thanks to everyone who chimed in. I am trying to get a "feel" for this bass prior to going in and trying one out. I agree that the beauty/value of any bass is in the hands of the holder. I just wanted to know what other people in the bass comunity(people who's opions I respectfully listen to/consider) thought of this bass: tone, playability, comfort, rationalization for the high cost, etc. Thanks again to all who responded.

I understand it's not the best of recording mediums, but if I close my eyes, all I hear is the sound I think of when I think of EMGs. I heard someone playing a mahogany-bodied, bolted-neck Spector at a store the other day and it sounded just like this (minus the cleaner playing!).

The definitely look nicer in the video, though.

You're welcome Angus. The recording really does not capture it's tone.The bass overall tone really has a in your face aggressiveness but in a good way, the tiny mic really compressed it's tone in a big way.

This is definately one of those basses that you just have to go and try out.....

I was not that hip to the looks in pictures, but in person. This thing is just cool. The styling is very Eisenhower Era cool. Rickenbacker like not in its design but rather in the design style.

The neck wood is very textured and I was thinking it was graphite, very clean sounding reminded me of my old modulus, in terms of clarity.

I didn't plug it in because..... well I just can't aford one and don't need the gas.

I had mentioned that a couple of times, and yes, I think that is a good call on their part. These are really great basses, and making them more accessible to more peeps is a very good thing.

That's missinformation.


The price of the basses were dropped to 3950 not $2800, and they also come with a Mono gig bag, custom case is extra.
