Check this out--this was my backline recently: Ampeg SBT preamp from the late 60's (I think). Originally it was paired with two powered 2x15" cabs!!). With the Peavey as power amp, through that cab. How'd it sound? Frickin' fantastic.

The SBT came out in 1969 and was short lived. It's a transistorized version of the SVT preamp.
I like mine. I use it as a pedal going into the input of an amp.

i was excited for five seconds until i learned it was solid state
why oh why can't we have that actual vintage SVT setup as a real tube preamp? (the various "SVPs" i've tried all have totally different architecture and sound totally different from the real thing)
Sounded absolutely killer, tubes or no. Kinda like how my 'ol 90's B100R sounds so good. And, solid state.
Surprisingly good sounding but using one now I'd want to have a trusted local service shop that liked this sort of thing. Mine was about 10 years old at the time and needed a couple of minor repairs over the year and a half or so I had it. To be fair though I was mostly on the road using it set to loud 6 nights a week.

Because a preamp doesn't have power tubes. Which is a big part of the famous SVT tone.
A preamp can simply not sound like any SVT unless you plug it in a tube power section.
Then till be way easier to go directly for the real thing IMO.
I had one with two 2x15 cabs back in the day and did a ton of gigs with it. I got it because a local influence was using one. My memory is it sounded good and was loud, pretty typical Ampeg sound, and the cabs weighed a ton. Then again back then almost everything did. Compared to the Hammond B3 I guess the cabs were light.
The interesting thing about the SBT is that it was the same topology as the SVT. They were designed at the same time, The transistors used were the BC169. These are in demand by pedal pushers.
The matching power amp was the SST with twin 15" JBL speakers. If you wanted more power, add a second self powered cabinet. Hammond did the same thing with the Leslie speaker cabinet.

I think the IIP comes the closest. but still its own thing and just an approximation without the tube power section

Kinda cool to see the OG discrete transistor and IC takes on the SVT preamp.
The ss b-xxx series are pretty loud and stable for 100 watt ss heads from the 70's. I used my b-40 through a 15 for drum triggers for a while when my band had a too delicate dummer.
