Registered here to be able to ask a few questions here and there when I have them. I read Talkbass occasionally, and I like the atmosphere.

I am not a trained and true bass player, I am a drummer. however, I dabble in every instrument, and now I am playing bass in one of my groups, so I figured it would be best to associate with real bassists and gain some insight. I'll be asking many questions around here, so anyone with experience would be greatly welcomed to lend me your wisdom.

I like that. The most important thing is to remember that you aren't a guitar player, and your job is the bridge between rhythm and tone

I play with a couple EXCELLENT bassists, but one in particular I can say "Holy crap, this guy is a born bassist in every regard." I've also played with some horrible bassists and know exactly what their faults were... not knowing their place' Just as the drummer has his job and place, so does the bassist. I read an interesting thing once that basically said "a real bassist uses the space in between notes just as importantly as the actual notes to formulate and articulate a groove." That's something that one bassist I played with in particular NEVER did (8th notes all day baby) and man, did he rip into his strings every time. Buzz buzz buzz.

Basically, don't be a D.

Anyway, I'm trying to use that knowledge and wisdom to formulate my own style and hopefully get into good habits. So just as much as you guys want to hear drummer's advice, I want to hear every advice, wisdom and knowledge real (meaning, not me) bassists can impart on me so I can learn from the best.
