Not so Brief intro: New to the Bass guitar. I've been playing for about 2 months, give or take. I'm a Southpaw, tried a RH bass, but I was blowin' spit bubbles. Decided to go for an "entry level" pakage, and bought a Rondo SX Ursa 1 LH Bass/amp to see if I would last. Turns out I love playing bass and I'm starting lessons tomorrow.

Oh... I've since procured a Schecter Stiletto Studio 4 LH. The thinner neck is much easier on my hand, love this bass, but need to learn to manage its sustain, which seems to go on forever unchecked. I still play the Ursa. A pair of SD Vintage pups and some EB Super slinkys and I have a great sounding Bass that's more forgiving.

I also enjoy sport touring motorcycling and motocamping, a bit of a motor head, and a photography drone 'enthusiast'.

Welcome. That sustain thing; we all have to figure it out as our beast does go on. I like the sound of the upright bass and found that by putting foam rubber under the strings at the bridge. This kills the sustain quite a bit. Then I put flat strings on and the flats with foam do come close to the upright sound I was looking for.

I use the foam rubber from a paint brush. To give this a quick see if you like it - and have no foam handy - stuffing a sock under the strings at the bridge will give you an idea if this is something you might like.

The foam idea sounds good. I'll give it a try. Considering what I've got into this already, the cost of a foam brush probably won't break the bank!

Yeah... I thought about being the flashy whammy bar slappin' lead guitarist, but I've always liked the "makes it look easy" nonchalant disposition of bass players. Always caught on to bass lines first when listening to music too. Seemed natural to go with the lows!
