New to the forum, not at all new to bass though!
I got my first bass when I had my first job in high school, I bought some cheapo Peavey bass & amp "starter kit" probably around 2002, upgraded to a 6 string Ibanez sometime around 2006-2008, and much more recently I had my luthier buddy convert a super cheap Baltimore 4 string to fretless.
I had wanted to play fretless for a long time ever since trying one at a Guitar Center like 15-20 years ago, and I'm really glad I had that conversion done. I really really took to fretless, to the point where I decided to take a huge leap into a Warwick 5 string fretless), and I haven't been able to put the damn thing down ever since I got it a few weeks ago. (I asked my husband to buy it for my 40th birthday recently, so technically it was a gift, even if I specifically asked for it!)
I've also been playing guitar since sometime around 2008 when I picked up an Epiphone acoustic and a Strat not long after that. I briefly had a Schecter 7 string, the Jeff Loomis signature, but I sold it after a few years.
I got my start on keyboards, though, when I was really young I had a Casio PT-87 keyboard that I remember playing with a lot. Later in my childhood I got a Casio SK-1 and I remember my parents noticing I could play some music by ear, so that must have been an early spark for me.
Never really played in a band or even written my own music. I pretty much just cover existing music I already know and like, and just in the privacy of my own home for my own enjoyment. Up until recently, I joined a local School of Rock adult band program, basically a group of adults who rotate in and out of a set list of songs that we practice weekly for a few months, then we go perform the set at a bar. I had my first round of that and got on stage in January with them and performed four songs on keyboard. It was so much fun and I really enjoyed diving in deeper on keys specifically. Now I'm on two songs as bassist as well this time around, and I've also very recently joined a cover band that's adjacent to the School of Rock thing, playing bass with them at the moment.
I really want to start creating my own music, but I have a ton of mental blocks that get in my way - self esteem issues, lack of even a passing understanding of most of basic music theory, and a strong aversion to using a DAW (though I have used Garageband a long long time ago, and I'm open to using whatever works well on Linux these days). But it's an active intention for me to work on this, especially while I'm in between jobs (and maybe careers - shag AI)
Anyways that's a lot of rambling, I'll leave it there for now, but I'm eager to dive back into this awesome old concept of a proper web forum!
