Welcome to the wonderful world we call TB!!! I was in a cover band within 6 months of playing bass. You can do it!!
Played rhythm guitar in a Country band. The bassist said to me: "I'm going to bring my rhythm guitar and sing and play here next week. Take my bass and back me up. Use our fake chord sheet music and put the root of the I chord on the A string. The IV will be up a string, same fret and the V will be down a string same fret from the I chord's root. I-IV-V all at one fret location. It's not rocket science. Yes there is that rhythm thing, but, just pound roots to the beat. Not a step for a stepper. Jump in.
Turned out to be a piece of cake and I was backing him up, with the help of some fake chord sheet music from then on.
Ask Google for some fake chord sheet music using these search works; Chords, Name of the Song. For example: The University Of Texas - The Eyes Of Texas (Chords)
When they start paying you to play then you have to leave the sheet music at home. But, until then, grin and play from fake chord sheet music, you've brought on stage.. We all had to start somewhere.
