Hi to all from Jeff Berlin

I never played through anything other than my Jeff Berlin 15 inch Combo and the reports about it have been so through the roof, that I knew that I made the right decision to become a Markbass endorser. I can only imagine that their other amps are as fantastic as the amp that I play through.
I will definitely take your approach to heart.
Learning to to play better and learning music in general isn't hard. It simply requires repetition. There's nothing in becoming a better player. you just have to stick with it, and make sure that when youare tired, to put your bass down for a little while and then pick it up later. So many players abuse themselves by practicing way way longer than they should. Everybody who comes to The Players School of Music triples their playing without a lot of hard effort because they are practicing the "good stuff" and they are practicing it over time.

Hi Jeff! Lately I have set aside music theory. I don't focus much on specific notes anymore on my fretboard; instead I now see patterns and try to think of degree differences as certain sounds, and use this relative thinking to create music. What do you think about my current approach to learning?
I have only been playing for about 1 1/2 years, but I love music with such a strong passion. I have become pretty comfortable with playing in a major key "mentality" over past year, but I do find limitations in my playing(most of what I play tends to sound the same). I have NOT spent any quality time learning any actual songs, which might be a problem.
What could you recommend I do at my current level to push past any plateau I may be at?

Geddy and I share similar backgrounds in that his parents and my father were holocaust survivors. My father didn't get deported, but my grandparents did. My father ran and went through so many unreal episodes where his life was in the balance on several occasions, stories that most people wouldn't believe if I told them. He's quite a remarkable guy. \
To be honest, you are delaying your musical progress this way. Music is factual and the facts have long ago been established to help you to play. If you start in invent new principles of regarding your musical homework, you, as a player not qualified to make these decisions, are sabataging your progress. Stick to what works and you will learn way better and much faster.
I ought to ad a comment from Daniel Webster who said, "Wisdom begins at the end!" This is why a lot of players have difficulty playing or know what or how to learn. They haven't done it right to finaly see the benefits of the work that they did in a correct manner from day one, hopefully.
Do you find this had something to do with your drive, and even sense of humor? I'm not close personal friends with Ged like you are, but having met and talked with him I get the distinct impression he doesn't want anybody to say "I'm sorry" or dwell on that. Instead it was a catalyst to push the boundaries and succeed. A "reminder of life" as I think he put it.

My drive comes from my love of music. My character has been affected with the stories that my father told me since I was a boy. But, music runs in me like a river. I am not in the music business to have success. I am in the music business because I love to play. I am a lucky guy!
Jeff, where do you find influences when you are writing your music? When listening to rock or whatever, it's often easier, with the help of lyrics, to see where a writer has found influence for a particular song, but with jazz and fusion it can often be more obtuse!
Do you find that you tend to write from a musical point of view, trying to find a good melody and develope that, do you think of something else like, like trying to draw on some emotion or metaphor to let that spur on the creative process? Or do you hear music made by others which inspires ideas in your own writing?
As just a small time musician and writer, I find that some ideas come from my hands and my playing, and some things really make me want to sit down and make music about them. It would be interesting to hear how someone with such an accomplished grasp of music and the theory behind it writes.

hey jeff! what would be more benefiting to me as a musician; take piano lessons or try to teach my self bass from books?
I love mine. I have been gigging it steadily for a year. I can't imagine using anything else. I have been warned by my bandmates not to show up with anything else or else. You know if the drummer and guitar player notice that it sounds good...it must be remarkable.

They have built a new version that has the same unbelievable neck that I love to play on. Dean doesn't like to advertize exept through their website. But I am quite sure that they have new versions of the bass that I play. But make sure that you practice well to make it sound great.
