If I practiced to get a gig, i would have been finished practicing decades ago. I could read, solo, comp in different style when I was 21 years old. But I couldn't PLAY!
I have always practiced for the artistic inspiration of doing new and continuously creative things on my bass. These days, EVERYBODY plays faster than I do. They use five fingers when they pluck, they blaze through tunes. I am the old man now and I can't do these things. What is left to me is whatever it is that I can find that is different, inspirational, meaningful to me as a player.
I still work on new things and review some old ones. All in all, as I age, I am becoming a better and better player because, in art, as a young man, up until I turned 50, I SUCKED! I HATED MY PLAYING and I cannot listen to those records. But, now, at least I don't hurl when I hear my playing which means that maybe I am getting a little better as I get older.
