High action on my VM Jazz

hi.
i have a Squier VM jazz. and i really dig its tone a lot. the only problem i find with this bass is its sky high action! i played a Ibby SR300 recently at a nearby store and absolutely loved the feel of the neck. it had a wonderful action. so i was wondering is there any way i can lower my bass' action like that Ibby's.

i have tried lowering the action from the bridge, but when i make it too low...there is so much of FRET BUZZ! :mad:

i was wondering if u guys can help me out her. :)

My VM Jaguar did not need a fret dress to get very low action. I'm sure it depends on the individual instrument, but if you can't get quiet low action by simply adjusting the bridge height, it might just need a truss rod adjustment.

Have you checked the relief on the neck? It's my understanding that the Squiers don't have the carbon fiber support rods in the necks like the Fenders do. You might need to tweak the truss rod a few times (1/4 turn at a time) to get the action where you want it. I had to do this on my VM fretless Jazz.

1. Don't worry about that just yet, get a setup first.

2. You adjust the truss rod to add/remove relief. You raise/lower the bridge saddles to raise/lower the action. Both of these in conjunction with adjusting intonation would be a setup. Check the link in post #4 above, it explains everything.

Here's one of the handiest things I've found on the interweb - it's a "setup instruction manual" from none other than Gary Willis. He does a great job of making a seemingly complicated process very easy to understand. While written for fretless basses, the info applies to fretted as well:
