High C string for medium scale bass

High C strings are single-wrap (no taper at the tuner end), so it really wouldn't matter how short you cut them.

Given the scale length and location of the tuner, you might get away with using a regulate .032-.026 guitar string. Just feed a bass ball end through the string so it’ll sit in the bridge and you should be good.

What Jon Moody said. Remember that guitar strings, as he said, are this diameter, and wind with no issues around a standard small post guitar tuner.

There are several string brands that sell individual high C singles. They are long scale but are fine for any scale bass, you can wrap as much of the string around the post as you want, as they are pretty small gauge (~.030-ish). I do that on a short scale bass. You can cut off excess if you want, just as usual try to leave at least 3 wraps around the tuner post.
