OK - I've been playing since 1974 and a good portion of my career it was the Ampeg SVT Classic head with 8x10 bottom combination. I've been in bands playing larger venues and clubs. Years ago I switched to a Mesa 400+ head (still have it) with Ampeg SVT 8x10 bottom (still have two of those). I also own a Traynor YBA 300 (a great amp), and might add a Reeves 225 soon as well. So - that's my history - big, loud tube amps through 8x10 cabs.
My last gig was the quietest band I've ever played with, though - no need for any of that so I used an Ampeg 4x10 cab with a [Invalid or Expired Link Removed] head I bought here on TalkBass. I went into that purchase pretty skeptical it would have the power and/or sound I wanted - and I love that amp. Really like the simplicity, the power, the sound - perfect for that gig.
Well, that gig ended and I got a gig with a rock band - a little bit bigger shows, but still no need for the huge 8x10/tube amp combination. So I picked up an El Whappo cabinet and a Trickfish Bullhead 1K amp. Jury's still out on this combination. Unfortunately I don't have the Bass Block 800 at my house right now to do an A/B with the Trickfish, but if both amps were available and I had a gig right now I'd probably take the Quilter.
In the meantime I hear about these two "Class D" heads: Bergantino Forte HP and the [Invalid or Expired Link Removed]. You can't just go to any music store in WI and try these things out beforehand, so just looking to see if anyone has actually used any or all of these products and has any feedback on them, or any other products I might not even be aware of yet.
If I wind up getting the Reeves I'll most likely use that with the El Whappo and that'll be that. Doesn't mean I'm not a total gear head, though - so just looking for thoughts from players who actually have used some of these products, both good and bad.
