High Pass Filter (HPF) and Low Pass Filter (LPF) Mega Thread

Any opinions on Broughton vs fdeck?
They have different amounts of cut or slope if you prefer that term.

Broughton =12db per octave at the frequency you select.

fDeck series 3 is also the same except there is a second fixed filter of 12db per octave at 35hz which gives you at least 24db per octave at 35hz and below.

Also the range of selectable frequencies is different for each.

B=25Hz to 190hz
F=35hz to 140hz

For use with a typical bass guitar amplifier the Broughton should be more than enough to tame subsonic thump and protect your speakers. Most amps have some sort of fixed hpf built in to them.

If you are using a poweramp that has no HPF built in, like one designed for a PA or an old SWR, IMO the fDeck is better suited for speaker protection.

One fairly significant difference is with the broughton the volume control all the way down is Unity gain ( or close) and then you can get a huge amount of Boost from there.
Another way of looking at your bass' eq is that if, e.g., your HPF cuts everything 60hz and below, everything that your bass and amp tone controls add above 60hz would be more emphasized, thus allowing for much more control and the ability to change the resulting output tone of your rig.

And it's not like your typical HPF is adding anything to your sound (it's subtractive by nature), so aside from a gentler or steeper slope, how different can they really sound.

Yes, some filters may add resonance at the cutoff frequency, but that's not what I'd call a "typical" filter in this case.
By subtracting mud, an HPF makes the remaining freqs able to be more pronounced and balanced.
 
Maybe I just purchased a Broughton always-on HPF. Maybe I also purchased a Broughton LPF. Maybe I should never have sold my fDeck HPF-3 or my [sfx] microThumpinator in the first place. Maybe...

This might be the only thread I've read entirely. I had been on the fence about getting an HPF. I ordered the adjustable HPF from Broughton. I'll do my best to not flip it in six months like I do with most gear.

If so:
Crossover Filters, Band-Pass Filters and Polarity
When you enter the "XOVER" Sub Menu, you are given three
options for how the band-pass filters can be set. When Set
"BP Filters Independently" is selected, the Channel A and B
high-pass and low-pass filters are individually set.
If you are using the amplifier in a stereo system where both
channels will be set the same, select "Channel B=A" and both
channels will be set at once. Setting the filters for Channel A
also sets Channel B.

If you create a crossover between channels of the amplifier,
select "X-over Freq A Lows B Highs" and crossover frequency
and filter type can be set with one set of controls. Set by
crossover screen, High-pass and Low-pass


The filter types available for the high-pass and low-pass filters are:

Off
No filter
BW-12 dB
Butterworth filter with 12 dB per octave slope. -3dB at corner frequency.
Butterworth filters have a flat frequency response in the pass-band.
Butterworth filter with 18 dB per octave slope. -3dB at corner frequency.
BW-18 dB
Butterworth filters have a flat frequency response in the pass-band.
BW-24 dB
Butterworth filter with 24 dB per octave slope. -3dB at corner frequency.
Butterworth filters have a flat frequency response in the pass-band.
LR-24 dB
Linkwitz-Riley Filter with 24 dB per octave slope. -6dB at corner frequency.
LR filters combine for a flat response at the corner frequency.
