I have this bass, Invalid Link Removed
I love it to bits but the pickups just don't cut it for me, does anyone know if there are any straightforward pickup replacements I can buy, soundwise like the Seymour Duncan's SJB-2's, or will I need to do some serious customization, and is that even possible?!

Hey noooob;

I just picked one up this past weekend and I love it too. I'm wondering how you made out with the pickup change. I'm thinking try flats first, because it doesn't sound bad with the original strings. But, in all fairness, I haven't jammed out with it yet. And I know it will sound different in the mix.
So, any guidance you can provide will be much appreciated.

I have this very same bass...got it for sale used very inexpensive and also love it. I am a flatwound lover and put a pair of LaBellas on and it does indeed give it a nice vintage thump. I've also been pondering replacing the pickups, and will be curious how this turns out for you. Flats added a new dimension for sure though. :)

Sorry for the delayed reply. t took some time to finally get the flats on the bass.
I Love this bass, especially with the flats. I'm getting a deeper, richer tone now; one that I prefer.
Still haven't taken it out to jam, but my nephew was over the other day, played it for a few minutes, and now he wants one too.

If you want to swap those pickups for something new, just measure the route size and find a small soapbar to match.

:D I'm so glad that you're enjoying it too! It really does have a great vintage thump.. Between the flats, basswood body and the pickups themselves it's a very interesting combination and it has decent sustain. How about some of the details too,like the mat finish on the back of the neck and the mother of pearl block inlay on fretboard? For that price ? Are you kidding?! Haha! Great to hear it!

I know this is an old post, but I'm wondering if you ever compared the Galaxie to other shorts scales? I love the looks of the Galaxie, but tone is most important.

Hey 25-O; welcome to the "old' thread. The Galaxie doesn't quite give you the same thump as the other Hofners (CT and German Club), but you do get a nice range of sounds. I never tested it against a SS Fender or Gretch, as I've never seen them at the same location. From memory, I like the sound and feel better than the Gretch Jr Jet, and I just don't like the fret spacing of the Fenders/Squire (Mustang and SS Jag), so I never plugged them in. Hope this helps - But you'll have to try one out and see/hear for yourself. Good luck.
