Hofner Galaxie Bass

Does anyone have any experience with this instrument? How does it compare to other short scale basses like the Mustang?

All honesty, I don't think anyone got this one yet. I been looking at the white ones for a while.. No store carries them and they are a realllly good price. I dig the shape and I wish I knew how it sounded. Hopefully someone can help you out.

i bought this bass in december of 2009. 34" scale sunburst. the bass is heavy and the neck is chunky. the finish is very good. what kills this bass for me are the dead notes on the d string of all places. the a note and g are dead. sustain is very difficult to get. you have to play one before you buy. i may just have gotten a bad apple. the pick ups are very weak. and lack definition.

I'd like to add to what I posted in the other thread.
I got the short scale version, exactly like the one at the top of this thread.
Pros- short scale neck works well. Easy to get around on, good string action. Funky, punchy sound. Nice neck, solid body and heavier than one would expect. Neat-looking, too. Very easy to play, especially once it's set up properly.

Cons- Tuners and bridge are remarkably cheap. Bridge is the biggest drawback on this one. I think they put these things on it because they were the cheapest as individual units. Also the jack is a little tight and in a weird spot. Not the greatest intonation or defintion, either, but as a short scale it doesn't seem to be as much of an issue.

What I like about this bass is that its flaws are every bit as evident as its good spots. It doesn't try to trick you at all, which to me gives it a kind of soul, as well as a saving grace as a fun instrument. There are some places (both literal and figurative) too dirty to take my nice, shiny Jaguar bass, and this thing seems to know them well.

I know this is years later :) but I just picked on of these up. The belchy sound is full and sounds like an old bass.
The racing stripe inlays look really awesome in person. Has a nice jazz bass feel, easy to play.

The biggest issue I see, is the tuners / machine heads. Aside from looking good, they feel really cheap. It looks like they pulled something from a classical guitar and popped them on this bass. They are small and dinky. I found a chromed set of 4 (non clover leaf because I think the head stock is too small) and popped them in. I had to significantly bore out the tuner holes to a little bigger than 5/8. To give you an idea, the bushing on the original tuners were 1/4 in diameter. I'm surprised they would put that small of tuner on a base, it would seem problematic to me.

I have a Fender MIJ short scale jazz bass - a JB62SS and there is a huge difference, but this bass is fun to play and keep around.
