Hofner-(not just Beatle Basses)-Group Part 2

I have been lucky with mine I put it away in 1998 and didn't really use it for the next 16 years. One of the first things

I was inspired by your pick to take an updated pic of my Hofner collection. Besides those below I also have an Ignition that I have been modifying for years. It has been on the back burner for a variety of reasons. I had to put new electronics in my 68 because the old pickups need to be rewound. I can't get that done right now, so the original electronics are in a bag in storage currently. A local tech ruined the 68 a little, but I don't want to talk about it.

Anyway, here are my Hofners left to right:
Shorty, Ignition, HCT, German 63 fretless, and my 68.

let's talk about hofner pickups. before this i was a single coil only person, i hated humbuckers. I've had the hofner for a few years now and it's been my only bass. i recently purchased a fender "because i probably need one around" since some session work they just want one. and WOW, those single coil just sound so thin, so trebly, so narrow. on the other hand, i go to the hofner and its wonderful beefy, thick meaty tone. Not too woofy or wooly (gibson mudbucker), but a big low end, present midrange, and light top end. there is punch and clarity but also that humbucker power behind it. i live on my neck pickup.

i won't go back to the single coils, the fender is being sold and i'm just in love with these hofner pickups (mine are staples).

You could get an Artist model. They are the most inexpensive German model. I think they are roughly 1600 USD. Thomann has the best prices.

I am a big fan of the Hofner pickups too and the overall tone of the instruments. I have four distinct pickups on my Hofners: blade; German staple; Ignition staple; and diamond. They all sound a bit different from one another. I agree what you say about the overall sound, but I wonder if it is the all around construction of the basses and not just the pickups that make the difference?

I am continually impressed with my Hofner club (German, violin finish). The pickups are HOT!!!! I did a recording session recently into an Ampeg SVT with 4x10HLF mic'd and was blown away by the tone. The pickups were overdriving that amp in a good way. One would think a small fragile bass like the Hofner would have smaller sounding pickups, but it has the hottest output of all my basses!
