I may have 'missed the bus' or something, but I was not aware that Hofner had ever made a Cavern version of their Club bass.

That is a very attractive burst and wood grain match on your D'Angelico , and BTW, the location of both of its pickups is very similar to where they are on a Ric 4001/4003, so I can appreciate why the 'bridge' pup might sound decent when soloed, from my own 4001, especially before I did my mods to it [Now Franken-Ric ].

And I have eyed Rumblekats a number of times, but never pulled the trigger.

And speaking of Epiphone, I noticed only just recently that their Viola bass has a Zero Fret - K00L !

Someone had offered one on Kijiji, and the pics showing this were very clear.

Hofner produces a Cavern model of the Club every few years. I think there is one on Reverb right now with neck binding. Kind of pricy I think.

They made a special issue Cavern Club in Germany but they never made any Contemporary Cavern Clubs. So I made my own and find it more versatile than the standard. The bridge pickup was always too quacky for me, and now it's very useable either solo or blended with the neck.

It could be done but it would be harder. The Ignition pickups drop down into holes in the top, unlike the Contemporary where they just sit on the surface. So it was easy for me to make a small cover over the original bridge position to hide the hole the wire went through. But on an Ignition you'd need a much bigger cover, and you'd have to router out another big hole in the new place. Here's an Ignition without the pickups.

Ah cool thanks so much for sending this, I much prefer the standard! And the bridge pickup on its own sounds surprisingly good as well. I didn't expect that.

G'day all. I became a Hofner devotee/convert about 2 years ago. Thought I'd share a pic of my 500/1-HGL. I wish I'd made this investment decades ago...

I tried several sets of strings it and stopped searching after putting on La Bella White Tape Wound Beetle Bass strings. My band mates commented (for the 1st time) on the great tone.

My amp is a Bugera Veyron Tube. I have a NU-X Solid Studio power amp simulator in the FX loop. I've always loved the sound of a vintage Ampeg being pushed hard (No, not down the stairs ). I run the gain into occasional clipping, volume (not master) at full. Mids are slightly boosted at 2.5 kHz, as are trebles. I adjust the bass to suit the venue, balancing the lower strings with the upper strings, and often reduce it a bit during sound check.
The Solid Studio is switched to El34 tube sim with a Bassman 4x10 cab sim and Neumann U87 mid position mic sim. A bit of drive and presence provides a touch of grit. I use the pedal's DI to feed FOH. If FOH also want a mic on the bass I have a Beyerdynamic M88 in my kit.
Yes the cabs are Phil Jones C4 and C8. I find the response of these to be the most accurate reflection of what my fingers are doing. The inertia inherent in larger speakers is noticeable to me after becoming accustomed to the PJB cabs. (I get all sorts of backline rigs at festivals. I try to get 4x10 or 8x10 but sometimes get 15s)
The master volume on my Bugera is rarely above 9 o'clock as by 10 o'clock it is too loud for me and way too loud for band mates.
I use the c4 alone at rehearsals.
The cabs are sitting on an Auralex Sub Dude isolater to stop physical coupling to the floor and mics via stands.

Decades ago, I owned a 1960s Kimberly bass that looked just like a Hofner 500/1 except it had F-holes, a tug bar -- and it was aqua! I loved the look of it!

What's the neck like on the CT Cavern bass? Is it a bit bigger than the other reissues? And, how does the sound compare to the other CT versions and the German versions?

I've been more than interested in the 58 re-issue bass. Would you tell us about how the sound compares to more modern Hofner's with staple pickups? Also, how does the neck compare to modern German made Hofner's?
