The bass was bought by myself in a musicshop in 1998. According to Steve Russel it's built around '94 or earlier, and sold to the store by a company called musicground.

The musicshop gave the superglue advice when I asked for parts for the tuner strips, it works, so i'll leave like that until it can't be glued anymore. The tuners are still functional.

Yeah, picked up my Ignition today. Very impressed by the feel and sound at this price point! Put a set of La Bellas on it, and it sounds great and plays like a dream right out of the box.

Those ugly black knobs have to go at some point, along with the rest of the control plate. No hurry though.

Got a Beatle bass case from Thomann that fits perfectly. Nice. :)

I'm trying to order an Icon right-handed sunburst. Simple enough? Get this:

Amazon: out
Sam Ash: out
Guitar Center: out
Musician's Friend: "Ships by June 22"
zZounds: July 9, 2012
Same Day Music: "backordered"
Durdel's Music: "Out of Stock — call for availability"
North Coast: "months"

Here's an excerpt from North Coast Music:

"April 2012 - Hofner is in the process of changing their US
distributor. As a result, we are experiencing a brief period of
time when all German and most Orientally made Hofner models
have become out of stock and unavailable. We hope that the new
US distibutor will have German made inventory available to
offer to dealers in May 2012, but Icon and Contemporary
basses and guitars may not be available for months."

Is this true?

Is there a straight story going on behind this? Is Hofner having a quality problem that's affecting supply? Did I pick the wrong time to buy this bass?

If I ordered through Sam Ash yesterday, when should I expect to receive it? I'm asking for the Icon right-handed sunburst.

I appreciate your help as I think through this.

I believe 8th Street Music has one left:

I don't know what's going on, but new Hofners seem had to find.

Good luck.
Thanks, Doc. I had looked there, too. Their price is a few cents under $500. Too steep, no? I didn't follow their click-through to get to see the delivery estimate, so it's not even certain they have it in stock.

MusicFun;

Thought it was 449 and I believe shipping is free. Since they are that hard to find right now, 449 might not be too bad. Who knows what they will cost when they become available.
It might be worth a phone call. They may even match the out-of-stock Sam Ash price.

Either way, good luck with your search.

Hey MusicFun, I know you're looking for a sunburst Icon, but I have a black CT I bought in January of this year that I'm selling for very close to that price. I know it's not your color preference, just thought I would let you know. Check my sig for the link.

It's official. I cannot get a delivery estimate for the Icon. I ordered one five days ago through a national online dealer. It's "backordered." I've spoken with the US Hofner rep who was kind enough both to call me back and reply directly to my e-mail. But, all he could tell me is that there is a supply/demand imbalance and it will be "a little while" before they work through that.

I also spoke live with the supplier. They have one unit scheduled to come in to them in mid-May, but they cannot say whether that would be mine or not. Remember that nobody (nobody at all) has this bass in stock right now, so why should I expect that first unit through the door to be the one I ordered five days ago?

Now, I can understand how any manufacturer would not want to give me a delivery estimate on behalf of a third-party dealer. That would be a recipe for crossed messages and could cause a strain between maker and seller. However, I would hope that the dealer could ask Hofner to provide a specific delivery estimate for my specific order. That does not seem to be coming any time soon.

I'd much rather use this forum to talk about how cool the bass is, and to share experiences with the rest of you. If I've bored you with this post, please forgive me. But I would like to hear from this group whether anyone else is having trouble buying an Icon these days.

And if it's a several-month wait, I'd sure like to know why, and whether this is typical or an aberration.

Many thanks.

Hi Kinetic. Thanks for the offer. I do want to get the full hollow-body Icon, however. I know that the CT's form factor is probably superior to that of the Icon, but I want the one that's under five pounds and I'm interested in the resonance of the hollow body. Good luck finding a buyer. Your price is quite attractive.
