Home brew pickup help

I built a pickup winder and made a couple of pickups (jazz style). Helping to keep them quiet I am going to connect the magnets with copper foil and ground it. When checking every thing with the volt meter I found out that the two outside magnets are shorting out to the coil. I lacquered the bobbin with the magnets. I cut all the wire off of both coils to start over again but decided to do some more tests. Another set of single coils I made are doing the same thing. So, I tested a Fender stacked single coil and found the same thing. When I put a probe on either outside magnet and the other probe on either end of the coil I get a reading of 50ohms. Is this normal?

You need to tape the magnets. Coil wire cuts thru the lacquer. That's why you are getting short on outer magnets.

Got some cloth tape, preferably, or even some paper painter's tape.

It doesn't surprise me that the wire is cutting through the lacquer. I'll wrap tape around the magnets. Thanks for the help.

gotta ask - if you have to tape the magnets, then why lacquer the bobbin?
