Home recording on a budget, help

I'm oldschool I guess I still use a Alesis SR16 and a tascam 4-track to record or save songs,,,,, I need to catch the train and be able to send clips through the mail to show people what I'm doing as I try to put another band together--> cassette hand offs are not practical anymore :crying: everyone wants some kind of file?

can you guys tell me what to buy thats cheap but works for a budget for the person who needs to record tracks and then e-mail them to people and also store them on a PC--> I type with two fingers I'm almost 40 so the easier the better.

thanks for any info or opinions ..

the boss micro br is only a few hundred dollars, have heard a few impressive recordings on one.i have the zoom h4n which is great but around 400 dollars in canada.check them out on youtube, plenty of recordings and instuctional vids.i used to own the old tascam 4 track great little units at the time but believe me you will be happy with the jump up to digital

Virtually *any* multitrack recorder you buy new will be digital. It's alot harder to find an analog tape recorder anymore. The Boss products are good, as are Tascam's, Korg, etc., but my suggestion, look for a unit that has "one button-one function" capabilities, or else you'll get lost inside the menu's and sub-tabs, (virtual switches and whatnot) It can get pretty confusing.

If you have a recording system that works for you, than I see no need to change it. You just need to be able to record the stereo out of your 4 track into your computer and then save that as a wav file or mps. If you are on a mac you can do this free with garage band and the 1/8 inch analog input on the mac, and I am sure there is a free way to do it on a PC and the analog (input on your sound card)
