I know I started off the thread asking about DAWs, but the interface also presents some issues.
How do I know if any one particular USB 3.0 interface will work? I'm interested in one of the Focusrite Scarlett boxes. There website doesn't say anything about Linux.

For decades now I keep hearing about "this is the year Linux replaces Windows on the desktop" and all they ever do is put lipstick on a pig. Like Macs, Linux seems to do a handful of things really well, but it's general lack of compatibility kills it. Also, someone needs to wake up to the fact that GUIs are here to stay. People have been using them now for 30 years. We like them. The Linux nerds need to learn that unless I can do everything in the GUI that I can do in the command line, I will never consider it a full Windows replacement.

Got news. You're about five years out of date with those concerns. The Linux nerds agree with you. The major distros now let you do everything any regular user would ever want or need to do with a GUI.

As far as a full Windows replacement goes, it's no longer an issue or concern. Microsoft and Apple are circling their wagoens and adopting increasingly closed "walled garden" software ecosystems. The Linux world has zero issues with them doing that or any interest in trying to get them to change their behavior. Linux has matured to the point where it can stand by itself and provide its users with a fully functional and productive work environment. I'm an IT professional with all the usual Microsoft's and Apple certifications. However, for my own personal use, I run Linux exclusively. Not because it's geeky, but because it just works. Last thing I want to do at the end of a workday is have to deal with some tech support hassles of my own at home. So Linux is the goto for my house (servers and desktops) plus my personal laptops. Life is good.

As far as Linux ever completely replacing Windows - it won't. Ever. Period. There's too large an installed base of users locked into Microsoft's way of doing things, with hundreds of billions invested in Windows-based software, for Windows to ever go completely away. At least not in most of our lifetimes. So I wouldn't worry about that. Because the Linux world doesn't worry about it either. It just continues to evolve and follow its own path. And it's running on everything, from your ebook reader and smartphone, all the way up to being the core operating system for the most advanced supercomputers in the world. 99% of the special effects and digital processing you see in tv and major motion pictures came from software and hardware running on Linux. As is the bulk of the Internet and most e-commerce systems.

I only bring this up to show Linux isn't going away anytime soon either. And as far as lack of compatibility goes, that's a conscious decision Microsoft made by declining to work with any standards it doesn't have absolute control over. Not that it matters. Most Linux apps can import and write Microsoft formatted files these days anyway.

If there's a Windows app you can't live without, use Windows. Linux can be run off a network share, a USB key or a DVD if you ever need or want to try it.

It'll also politely install itself alongside another OS on a hard drive and leave your original Windows installation untouched if you like. Something Windows won't do - and once again by design.

Here's the thing. The only dog looking to pick a fight these days in the operating system world is Microsoft. Everybody else has real work to keep them occupied.

I could see someone creating a full-blown turn-key recording system based on Linux some day. Something like Pro Tools on OSX. Linux has had several IO optimizations lately because of Oracle's effort to make it a preferred platform for their database application. I can see these also having real benefit to the audio world.

If something is running embedded software (like a recording console, your router, an advanced synth, or a smart tv) you can be very sure Linux is running underneath it all. The people developing those systems would be sunk if there weren't a fully open and customizable OS that they didn't have to pay a license fee to use.

There's people right now building very interesting music projects such as synthesizers using inexpensive tiny single board computers like Raspberry Pis and Arduinos. And all are running Linux.
 
I was using a 1st gen Scarlett 2i4 with Ubuntu Studio. Worked just fine. I went for the 2i4 because it has physical controls on the interface for everything => no software needed. The important term to look for is "class compliant" which means the interface should be working with Linux (or iPad,...)

When I wanted a bigger interface and asked Focusrite support whether "class compliant on Mac, driver needed for Windows" only referred to the 192kHz capability of the 2nd gen interfaces (which is a common problem on Windows system and would have made them fine for Linux IME) their answer basically was "Find out for yourself and at somebody else's expense". So I looked somewhere else and found MOTUs AVB interfaces. I can't recommend those highly enough for their web app. You can plug them into your network and run the software controlling the interface from your browser. Any browser, no matter if it's on a Mac, an iPad or a Linux tablet/phone/computer.

Yes, they are more expensive, at least initially, but I reckon that changes once all the computers are running on Windows 13 or OS XV "Dunghill Kitty" and your control software doesn't. And of course there's no new software because you are supposed to buy the Mk4 version of your interface so the company makes more money if you buy basically the same interface over and over again. But you can still run 20 year old web pages in your modern browser just fine if you can find them.

And you certainly need a software interface to control something like the Motu Ultralite AVBs 2 Mic/2 Hi-Z/6 Line/8 ADAT inputs and 8 Line/8 ADAT outputs plus several busses and AUXes and a DSP offering 4-band EQ, compressor, gate, reverb, HPF. All in a 9,5" 1U box. There's certainly no place for physical controls :D

Proprietary software is a problem on Linux as I just recently had to find out (yet again) when I tried to register and unlock the oodles of samples that came with the Arturia Keylab I got from my brother. Analog Lab itself runs just fine under Playonlinux, but the program you need to unlock it doesn't. So it's stuck in demo mode and 20 minutes at a time is a bit of a nuisance at best. It works perfectly with Bristol and Zynaddsubfx or directly as MIDI input in Ardour.

If you're not stuck on brand names you will be able to record music under Linux on at least a semi pro level. The operative words being "at least"! No need to invest in often rather short lived software by companies that treat you like you were a thief :mad:
Making it difficult for honest customers to use your products never has been considered good business practice. And it certainly never stopped criminals...

I've been thinking about trying to do multitrack recordings of band rehearsals (currently I just use an H4n and its built-in mics), but with 7 people we'd probably need about a dozen inputs and I'm a little daunted by the gear and setup required. I know, probably seems like not a big deal to many of you.

By the way, I ended up with a Behringer X18 Air--it seemed to be one of the cheaper ways to get 16 inputs and mic preamps. I record to Ardour on my Fedora laptop. It basically just works, though I still have a few minor things to figure out. For example, I should create a template so I don't need to manually setup the tracks and input routing for each rehearsal. But the bigger problems don't have much to do with Ardour or Linux: learning how to mic drums, how to keep down the bleed into the vocal mics, how to mix the result, etc.

Ardour on Linux probable covers at least 80% (prob. more) of what one would need.
There's T6 by Tracktion as an alternative.

One note: On Ubuntu (if not actually all Debian derived distros) and Mint, you need to be in the 'audio' user group to use Jack (use Jack not ALSA) with RTS, otherwise it won't start a new seesion. Add yourself to the audio user group (settings->users and groups), and then logout and back in again for it to take effect.

Depending on how much work you're doing and the power of your hardware, it may be worth going for a specialised distro such as AVLinux or KXStudio which have realtime support compiled into the kernel.

Home studio with Linux is perfectly viable these days. Most devices (USB) will work out of the box - a quick google with often let you know if it does or not.
 
I'm jumping in and reviving this thread just because.

I go way back to the DeMuDi audio distro from 2002. Linux for audio has come a long way. In the past it hasn't quite been a plug-and-play experience, and a lot of equipment manufacturers still don't provide drivers for Linux operating systems. Sometimes it takes a little extra configuring to set up. But it works great once you get it up and running. My current interface is not supported so I use Win 10 these days, but will sooner or later get one that is more friendly.

PS. I'm typing this on my Linux box even as we speak (type).
 
Wow this is an oldie but goodie :)

I'm typing this from my Linux Mint desktop and I have setup a recording box using AV Linux with Reaper for Linux in it and even using some of my Win VST bridged. It runs very well and I only have a core duo with 8 gb ram. Tracktion (Waveform) is my second DAW but I'm very tempted to change it for Harrison Mixbus 32c.
 
Thanks @Mcgiver69! I appreciate the other tool mentions I will have to look them up. I am looking at Ardour as a personal challenge to learn a Linux-only DAW just for the fun of it. Which interface do you use with Linux?

I have used various (Focusrite Saffire 6, Mbox 2, Behringer UMC22), now got one of those (wrongly maligned) Lexicon Omega which seems to work perfectly, I did some recording using all the inputs and the midi connection at the same time and didn't miss a bit.

If you are interested in Ardour you might be interested in Mixbus which is based on Ardour but with console emulations. From time to time they do offers for something ridiculous like $50 and sometimes $35.

I think Groove 3 has a complete course on Mixbus, if you take it you basically learned Ardour.

Thanks for the tip about Mixbus, Groove 3 and the interfaces you have used. I have outboard gear, so I have not tried recording with my computer yet. I have a Yamaha mixer that has a USB connection but the drivers for it require Windows and it is not recognized under the Linux distros I use. :( I bought it for mixing signals in a practice area and not for its connection to a computer, so I am not disappointed in that regard. Any recording I do now is to a digital 8-track recorder that I bought used years ago (and transfer the tracks to my computer). So one of these days, I plan to pick up an interface so I can use my XLR based microphone for use with the computer. Working with a Beat Buddy pedal makes me want to dabble with connecting other MIDI devices as well.

Well the beauty about Linux is that if you find a "Class compliant" interface all you need to do is to connect and you're good to go. Even the always faulty (Under Windows and MAc) M-Audio Fastrack will work very well under Linux. These and the M-Box2 will go very cheap on eBay ($25 - $30 bucks) and you won't go wrong with them.

The only advice I will give you is to install a SSD drive, this will improve your computer greatly and they go very cheap now (250gb for $40 bucks). I run one as main drive (OS & main working space) and have a normal drive as second, where I keep all plugins and projects I'm not working on at the moment.

Thanks for the advice! I will look for a class compliant interface and check out SSDs. I know you want to keep OS swap files off of the SSD as SSDs have a limited number of writes compared to spinning drives and you don't want to burn out an SSD prematurely. Also the failure mode of SSDs is complete failure without any warning signs, where as spinning drives give you read errors or make noises before they start going bad. Just something to keep in mind. The Spinrite disk utility can keep both types of drives working (though you would only run level 2 on an SSD, I believe). You can find that program at   Home of Gibson Research Corporation  . You can also find the Security Now! podcast there which is very informative.

This actually is a non-issue. I've converted my home machine to Linux in 2015 by just buying a no name SSD and installing Ubuntu on it, keeping my Windows installation intact. The computer I did this to was already a couple of years old and slightly out of date. The SSD is still running, though. The thing is that in this segment, the development is so fast that a SSD is basically rendered useless before it can reach its lifetime expectancy.
In my case, it is a 120gig SSD that cost me about a hundred bucks back when I bought it. This thing is now basically a waste of a SATA spot because a drive twice the size costs about 30 bucks. I've installed it into an old machine I gave away to my nephew where it's still running until he runs out of space and replaces it with whatever size he can afford.
You should, however, as you said, tell Linux to stuff the swap partition. It will complain, but comply.

Joining lnuxmusicians as I type this (waiting on confirm email), but I figured I would go ahead ask here. Does Linux support anything like aggregate devices ie OS X? Take multiple interfaces and gang them?

Yes you can do that (it takes Jack and typing a couple of commands from the command line) but be aware that because both devices have different internal clocks their timing will start drifting and you'll get latency (unless both your interfaces can be interconnected using an optical cable). You can record lets say a drum session without any issues but you will need to keep restarting the process to ensure the clocks fall back into sync. Which in the end makes buying a new interface with more inputs a better solution in the long run.

There are some instructions in the Ubuntu website, I have them at home and can post them later when I'm back if you are still interested.
