Again, some loved it, some hated it. For me, it works, didn't have many cliches, made me terribly anxious during 2 hours, and left a persistent need to look over my shoulder in parks.

I thought the whole thing was absolutely ridiculous and the marketing for the film with them claiming it was all real just added to the absurdity to it.

Most likely both.

I was a little kid in the 70's when I saw "The Legend of Hell House". It wasn't the first horror movie I ever saw, but for whatever reason, it scared the living **** out of me. Now, 40 years later, it's still the only haunted house movie that'll keep me up at night.

Maybe. One of the reasons Freddy was my favorite is he always made me laugh before he killed someone. Jason and Mike were real bad-asses and very brutal. Then Pinhead, he was just cool as f***

The thing with horror movies is that you can rank them considering how good you think they are, or how effective you think they are.
There are plenty of awful (and I mean BAD) movies that will scare or startle people. Some folks will consider them good, cause they fulfill their purpose.
Going with The Conjuring example, neither one left me completely terrified hanging from the ceiling, but I consider them good movies.
On the other hand, I saw Paranormal Activity and though it startled me a couple of times.... the whole thing is made of people sleeping. I thought it was stupid.

Same happens with comedies. I've seen very stupid movies, that still make me laugh. Are they good because of that?

I think the movies today rely mostly on the jump in scare. and they leave nothing to the imagination of the viewer. Like the tv commercial I think Gecko? where the question is asked should we go to the car or the barn with all the hanging chain saws and aren't they always running through the woods and tripping over nothing is what gets them killed. Just too predictable even with my hopes up for 10 Colverfield lane I was disappointed anyway.
They need more like When a strange calls that movie kept you gripping the arms of the chair this one not the new one this one from 1979

The thing with horror flicks these days is that the people making them take themselves WAAAAAAAAY to seriously. It's all about "psychological" terror these days. It used to be just a good scare cuz u ain't see dat guy wif the ax in the woods and then somebody's head is rolling. But it was obviously fake....and the slightest bit intentionally cheesy.

Horror movies were fun. They aren't fun any more.

I think horror is an individual thing to each of us.

I was at Camp Lejeune when Jaws hit theaters. I had a part time job with a dive shop in Jacksonville riding herd on the dive trips they ran out of Moorehead City on sundays. Pay $40 and get a tank, regulator, PFD, and a boat ride out into the richest ship graveyard on the Atlantic seaboard. They always took a few freebies to ride herd on the divers and keep them from running too far astray which was what I was doing. Jaws opened on wednesday and that sunday no one showed up for the dive except me and the shop owners. They were usually booked a couple weeks in advance so we had a full list of divers for that sunday, but not a single one showed up.

Oh and as for making horror films? Wifey grew up wanting to be the one who stood off camera and threw the buckets of chicken blood and pig guts.

surely it's done to death!! It wouldn't be a horror movie if there weren't any deaths!!! LOL

The only way to overcome this is something like Peppa Pig turning into a pork sausage and getting mauled by an old greasy salty big, bald, fat, guy wearing a dirty wife beater shirt, or My Little Pony gets assaulted by a matte black unicorn and starts begging for her life..... Ok I'll stop before the moderator kicks me out.

There's some bigger concepts going on here.

For example, the title of this thread:
"Horror Movies - Will they ever get good again"

I would have thought more:
"Horror Movies - Will I ever see one I like again"

There are still good ones being made, it appears as though you haven't found them.
However "good" is about personal taste, so is what we like.
And a lot of people don't like well-made films, if the story doesn't speak to them.
And a lot of people like garbage films.
That's just the way it is.
If we all liked the same movies, there would be one movie, directed by Micheal Bay, starring Nick Cage, Sandra Bullock and Samuel L Jackson, a romantic sci-fi horror comedy, and it would suck.

My favorite horror movie of all time is the Original Texas Chainsaw Massacre.
It is seen by many as a fantastic piece of cinematic genius, however, many don't like it.
