When I find a suitcase full of money I'll be buying one.
Saw and played a Smoothie at Time Square Guitar Center back in August. Looked beautiful and sounded fantastic. That said, didn't sound any different to me than a classic. If I had the $$, I'd spend significant time with both to make a decision.

Been thinking the same. Strangely, the closest sounding bass I have to a real 'Ray is one of these freakish things:

I can't fault anybody for wanting a Stingray. It is a classic, pure and simple. Listening to those guys, they simply have a ton of chops. When you play that well, you make anything sound good.
Yeah, and I can get the nicest bass on the planet, and still sound like... well, me.
But it makes me want to practice more, so not a bad thing in the long run necessarily.

I agree. I know I sound like a religious convert, but serious practice as opposed to just jamming, has given me a sense of peace I never had before. I still love gear, but I know I am the key, not my bass.
I've had my Ray almost 16 years.
I never get tired of its sound or feel.
I play mine with the tone rolled almost off; like Paul Denman on the Sade recordings.
The neck feels better in my hands than a Jazz bass.
Get one.

There is a Bo Diddly vibe to that bass that is kinda cool.
No doubt they can play.
I should be less lazy. Playing along to random songs tossed at me by my iPod is OK for some ear training, but I need to put in some actual work. I'll get around to it I'm sure, I've only been playing for 32 years, there's still time.

The Stingray was my first "good" bass. It set a helluva standard in my books. I highly doubt I would ever sell it. Extremely high quality with a great attention to detail in addition to both playing and sounding great. What is there not to love?
