"Hot Rodded" Basses

ok, so I've been searching around here on tb for awhile and I can't seem to figure this out.

What, exactly, is a "hot rodded" bass. I have heard the following used (maybe they mean different things?):
"fully hot rodded"
"Fender Hot Rod"
"hot rodded p"
"hot rod p"

I would assume the last two refer to precision basses, but some clarification on the whole thing would be greatly appreciated.

thanks

Fender produced a "Hot Rodded" Precision bass, which is also what people are referring to when they say hot rod P. It is a P bass with a jazz pickup. I believe that the pickups are wound hotter than their standard pickups. People may also say a bass is "hot rodded" if it has some sort of modifications, mostly regarding pickups and electronics.

Yeah- the Hot Rod P's are pretty awesome. The last Fender I had was a Hot Rod P that just barely lost out to my G&L SB-2 (which I then stupidly sold!). For some reason I think they may actually underwind the P pickup slightly (rather than overwinding the J) in these to get a better balance with the J pickup, though it could definitely be the other way around (I know one of the pickups was wound differently specifically for this bass). I ended up replacing the P pickup in mine with a G&L P pickup and tried a handful of different Js in it.
