Hotone Thunder Bass to Mixer/PA

Hey everyone,

My band is having a rehearsal Thursday to brush up before our Friday gig. It’s a small living room session, 3 piece band of bass, vocalist, and keyboard/ guitar who is also providing drum tracks via the keyboard (sets the loop, then plays keys/guitar to accompany).

Issue is, my wife will have the car at the time, so I need to ride my bike to rehearsal. I have a backpack gig bag for my bass, but there’s no way I’m strapping my rumble 500 on my bike. The only other bass amp I have is a Hotone Thunderbass. I’m thinking I should be able to run it into the mixer ->powered speaker that the keyboard is using, but not sure which output to use.

There’s a FX loop out, or a headphone “line out” (small Jack). The headphone out has also always made a nasty squeal when I use it. Can I run into the board from the FX out?

The FX Send is your best chance. The manual is not specific regarding whether it runs at line level or instrument level The FX loop on most amps runs at line level.

The FX Send jack is most likely 1/4" TS (unbalanced). If the mixer has a 1/4" line input, it may work but produce a ground loop.

If the mixer has instrument level inputs, you can plug your bass straight in.

I’d have to know what PA setup you are working with. Sounds like you’ll have to make do with the Hotone’s FX send and see how that works. If the FX loop is after the amp’s preamp, you’ll be able to adjust your tone as well as your signal strength. The Hotone amp really varies its output based on the position of the tone knobs. Set any knob to zero, and the signal cuts out - at least that’s how I remember mine working. So if you are getting low output, turn up the eq knobs.

Bring a speaker cable with you in case someone there has an extra cab you can use. Even a guitar cab will work as long as you aren’t pushing a lot of low end or high volume.

Alternatively, since practice is on Thursday, can you drop off some gear at the guy’s house today so that on Thursday your bass and amp are already set up for you there? Maybe look on Craigslist for a small used cheap bass cab? Can usually find something for $100. Then drop that off, and plug your Hotone in to that.

Definitely been eyeing a rumble 25 on CL for $90…but hard to justify it to my wife, and myself, when I only really need it for this one practice.

Resurrection time!

Got a couple Hotone heads recently and can verify that they run at line level on the FX Send. Not a problem running into a mixer that way by any means; I did exactly that before my Hotone Legacy Cabinet arrived, and it sounded fine if a little shrill since I was playing guitar thru the Captain Sunset.
