How about this deal?

Just bought locally. A SWR 4x10 Goliath III and a 1x15 Big Bertha for 400.00 delivered to my my house. I literally know nothing about these but thought it was a good price. I really don't need them but if my Berg goes down and I need a backup these should work. So would you all have pulled the trigger on these as a practice/backup plan for that price? I have the room to store them so thats not a concern.

Great deal. Just the Goliath III would cost about that much. I had one of those 115 cabs,a Son of Bertha, and it was a very good cab. I paid about $350 for it and thought it was a good deal. The best part of your deal is that both cabs are great sounding, for most people that stack wouldn't be be a backup.

Nice score

That is a great deal, Ive had that same setup for several years now. These days I´m using the SOB alone mostly, but they´ve been reliable, and still sound very good. Plus it´s a cool look. Here is a pic of the all SWR setup from a few years back. With the 750x on top it looks like the Harley Davidson bass rig. I always thought it sounded pretty damn good.

Well I got the cabs home. I thought it would be easier and the guy is a reputable stand up guy and it was on my way home. Plug in the 4x10. Sounds excellent. Really like it. Plug up the 1x15 and uh-oh. Nothing and my amps protect circuit engages. If the speaker is blown would the protect circuit kick on or could it be somethig else? I would think it would still make sound but buzz. I called the guy and he really felt bad about it. He offered to give my money back or fix it and was insisted on it. I really believe he didn't know it was gone cause he was willing to drive way out of his way to my house so I could try them out first. I am the one who called and said I would pick them up. Just in talking with him I could pick up that he was being honest. If not then it is what it is. No big deal. I still got a good price.

Now another question. Since I am going to have to have it reconed should I just go ahead and bypass that option and put a badass speaker in there? Or is the speaker in it a nice one?

Pull the speaker and check the internal wiring. I bought a
WM 4x10 once for cheap that wasn't working. One of the
leads had fallen off. I reattached it and it was fine.

While you have it out check the wiring at the input jack.
Use a volt/ohm meter.

Plug a cable into the input jack and check that both the tip
of the cable and shaft of the cable are continous to the
internal wiring.

Finally, disconnect one of the input leads of the speaker and
put the ohmmeter on in momentarily to see if current flows
through it. If it is blown out, you will have no current
through, likely a blown voice coil.

If the speaker is a cast frame basket, get it reconed. If it
is pressed metal, I would check with SWR for a replacement
cost first.

So, in summary, check all the wiring and connections first,
then check the speaker. Checking through the signal chain is
simply a process of elimination.
